Yesterday while using my YM1700 doing some bush hogging, I was going up a steep place and it hit some soft sand on one side. As the right wheel was spinning I thought that was a good place to finally try out my Trans Lock. So I stopped and pushed the lock down. Worked just great, came right on up out of it. But when I let off of it, I thought it was suppose to come back up, by its self. But it didn't, I had to lift it up with my heel, to get it it back up. Is this the way they are suppose to work, or do I have a problem?

Put some lube on the shaft where it goes into the rear end. PB Blaster works great. It gets rusty there.

I think what you describing is normal, or at least it's the same with my YM1700. When I use Diff. Lock, I have to come to a stop (most of the time) or put in reverse and back up before it will unlock. On ocassion, it will unlock by itself but not always.

My YM2220D does the same thing. Also our IHB414, so its not limited to grey markets.

Normally, after you lift your foot, and the pressure in the wheels equalizes, (lock no longer needed), the lever will restore by itself. If it does not, then you need to free-up where it enters the case.

My 1500D works like that too, and yes, the linkage is free. I found if I press the clutch a couple times or just stop moving for a second it will pop back up. Sometimes, you need to remove the load on the gears in order for them to slip apart.

Make sure the lever is free and then you have nothing to worry about.

I'll add a vote to the "it's working normally" group. Getting it to work like it says in the book starts with having everything greased and no rust on the shaft that goes into the tranny or on the lever pivot. If it is cleaned and lubed, the little disengagement spring has enough force to unpin the differential lock plus lift the lever when you take your heel off the lever....as long as you also slow up and take the load off of the differential so that the diff locking pin can slide free. Otherwise it needs a little help.

Its really a slick little mechanism. Simple, tough, cheap to build, and not much to go wrong. About all that ever happens is that the actuating shaft gets rusty. And the only way to really mess one up is to engage it when the wheels are spinning fast. Anyone who does that will discover a direct connection betwen that little lever and their pocketbook....

mine stays down until the "load" or torque is off the wheels and pops right up.
