Here's what the setup looks like so far:
IMG_0273.JPG

Where the 90 degree elbow is will be another straight piece of pipe going into the diesel.
Looks good so far except you should be using black pipe copper or brass pipe and fittings. Galvanized pipe has a tendency to flake off into diesel fuel.
You don't want that to get into your engine.

I put a union on the line just before it goes into the drum to make it easy to disconnect the drum in order to take it to get it filled if I ever need to do that.

I don't know how you plan on getting down through the top of the drum but here are photos of the fitting I used for that.

The union is attached to one end of it in the above picture of the drum.

Will grab a piece of black iron for insertion into tank. Haven't determined the fittings for the top of tank because I'm still looking for a tank.
Maybe if the bung is the correct size I can fabricate a fitting similar to yours. All remains to be seen for now. Thanks for the pics.

The Bungs on the plastic 15 30 and 55 gallon drums are 2 inch .
One is standard Pipe thread and the other is some odd ball type I forget the name of it at the moment.
The 2 inch bung has to be reduced to either 3/4 or 1 inch
to fit the adjustable suction tube that goes inside the drum. I got my 2 suction tubes from T S C .
The suction tube connects to the bottom end of this fitting

The union with the hose on it going to the pump connects to the top end of this fitting.
The way I assemble everything is install the union on the top of the fitting .
Next attach the suction tube to the bottom of the fitting.
Now drop the tube down into the drum and screw the 2'' bushing on the fitting into the 2 inch opening of the drum.
caution make sure you don't get it cross threaded and don't over tighten the bushing. Those steel threads will chew up and strip the plastic threads in the drum real easy if you're not careful.
I took a piece of aluminum scree wire and made a screen and clamped it to the bottom end of the suction tube with a hose clamp to keep any large objects from getting into the pump.

The drum needs to be vented .
You use the other 2 inch bung and cap for that.
In the center of the cap is a 3/4 inch pipe thread.
Drill a hole in the center of the cap quite a bit smaller than the 3/4'' threaded hole.
Take a short 3/4'' piece of black pipe 3 or 4 inches should do it.
Screw a 3/4'' street ell onto the 3/4'' pipe.
Screw another 3/4'' street ell onto that one.
Make a screen out of a piece of aluminum screen wire and attach it to the end of the street ell with a hose clamp.
Screw the 3/4 pipe into the 3/4'' threaded hole in the cap.
BE careful not to overtighten cross thread or strip the threads.
Now install the cap back on the drum.
This will vent the drum and this cap will be the one you remove to fill the drum.

Here is a picture of the vent on the drum.
I would still replace the galvanized stuff with copper brass or black pipe and fittings.

RE:
Black iron fittings would only need to be AFTER the filter as filter would catch any 'flakes' of galv that might come loose.

I used mixture of brass and PVC on my setup.

Since I'd rather not have the flakes accumulating in the pump lines or drum I didn't use any galvanized just a combination of black pipe and brass.

Post some pictures of your set up.
That would be nice.

Ordered a 2 handled drum online from Gempler's yesterday. At least I know it'll be clean.
Will convert pump setup to black iron before use. I had thought about PVC for ease of assembly, but had fears of the petroleum breaking it down over time.
Also discovered that the filter element that comes with setup is not a moisture absorber. Will switch that out to the correct part # also before use.

*Good idea.
**Definitely want a water blocker filter.

No pics yet, but project is complete. Changed all pipe (except for vent) from galvanized to black iron. Switched the element in the Goldenrod filter unit to a water absorbing element. There's also a fine screen filtering tube at the end of the pickup tube.
Put 10 gallons of diesel in today and it works slick as a whistle.
