Transmission fluid for 4220

   / Transmission fluid for 4220 #11
I wish the industry used clearer designation for tractor hydraulic fluids. I have learned a long time ago that paying a lot for an item doesn't always correspond with guaranteed superior quality. And a lot of us don't have the luxury income to just run down to the New Holland or IH dealer and pay twice the price that we would for a premium fluid elsewhere. I agree that 303 is outdated, designed for stand alone hydraulic systems, and shouldn't be used in a modern combined transmission/hydraulic system. But how are you supposed to know when you are really buying what a modern tractor needs? The way it was explained to me by a long time tractor mechanic is that if it says Premium UTF on the label it is the right stuff. It is that simple. You can pay $50 for 5 gallons or $100 for 5 gallons, the choice is yours, and the performance won't be any different between the two.

We use a lot of "hytran" our IH dealer carries the Pennzoil, which we use mainly, if it's not available we use the genuine hytran, our New Holland dealer is a lot closer so for grabbing a quick bucket we will stop in for it.

The Shell Spirax S4 TXM is a good choice,
as is Pennzoil HYDRA-TRANZョ Multi-Use Tractor Fluid for Hydraulic, Transmission, Differential and Wet Brake Systems

When a fluid meets or exceeds
IH MS-1204,MS-1206 (Powergard PTF),MS-1207 (Hy-Tranョ Plus)
or
JD J20 A, B, C and D

Personal my primary winter tractor has Cen-Pe-Co Multi-Purpose Hydraulic & Wet Brake Oil in it.
Which specs as follows

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER USE "303" OIL in anything that needs extreme pressure additives, or has any type of wet brakes or wet clutch.

John Deere cautions against this all the time... the "303" SPEC dies in the late 60's.

I see too may expensive tractor repairs from cheap oil.
I wish the 303 spec stuff would just DIE already.... but people keep buying it...

I use it in my Fords and it's around for the old machines. On the Bransons, J20C spec is popularly available for all the newer whistles and bells.

Pulling up an older thread as I prepare to take possession of my new 5220R. When looking for premium tractor fluid, Tractor Supply seems to have an option. Can anyone comment on their fluid?

Their site doesn't list much about the fluid, but I found a reviewer who posted this:

Does this appear to be a good option for the Branson Transmission/Hydraulic needs?

J20C (since JD is popular and shows up when anything does for the premium fluid requirement) is what I look for with my 2 Bransons since they have wet brakes and hydrostat steering.....The 6530 has shuttle shift and independent clutch pack driven PTO adding 2 more goodies that require premium fluid.

The 3910 has wet brakes so that adds it to the list. The 2000 and 3000 are old school and aren't picky....I use the 303 spec for them but it seems to be disappearing due to the whale oil thing in the spec so I just look for a field tested trans/hydraulic fluid for them.

Thanks Texasmark. It appears the premium fluid at Tractor Supply specifically calls out J20C as a compatible fluid. Good news since I can obtain this locally.

That's what I use. Didn't want to opinionate you.....let you make your own unbiased decision. Grin I'm of the opinion that it's blended and packaged by Warren Oil Co, big coast to coast multimarket lubricant supplier. They have a www. I don't remember exactly but some fluids have their name on the back of the container rather than the words "Packaged for xyz company" and not mentioning by whom, like WW for example.
