Does anyone have a recommendation for buying GL-4 rated gear oil for the transmission on a 4500?
The manual says to use the following and I have been unable to find any GL-4 rated fluids. Everything is GL-5 rated which the manual says to not use.
API GL-4 SAE90EP
SAE 80W90EP
Chevron Gear lube SAE80w-90
Tranself EP80W-90

I have tried tractor supply, walmart, autozone, O'riley.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure where you read in the manual that calls for GL-4. Use normal GL-5. what year is your 4500? BobG in VA

In the lubricants section of the operator's manual for the '00' series
for transmission oil it has a sentence that states:
Since transmission involves copper based alloys, it is strongly recommended NOT to use GL-5 rated category.
My 4500 is 2001 model.

I just double checked my manual (I have an '02 model 6000) and the application for the transmission says"SAE80W90EP*" Below there the asterisk (*) says "*To comply API GLU-GL5"......so thats what I used to change my trans oil last winter. I found this on page 64 of my Owners Man. BobG in VA

Use API GL-4 gear lubricant ( Extreme Pressure ) as per the
table A given. Viscosity grade of oil is to be selected based
on the expected air temperature range during the period
between oil changes.
Since Transmission involves copper based alloys, it is strongly
recommended NOT to use GL-5 category.
Following brand are recommended against SAE 80W90EP
1) Chevron RPM Multipurpose Gear Lubricant SAE80W-90.
2) Gulfgear EP 80W90
3) Tranself EP 80W90

Best of luck.......................

When the GL-5 category came out many lubricant manufacturers were using additives in their gear oils that were harmful to the yellow metals found in manual transmissions. Since it's inception the majority of lubricants manufacturers have switched their additive chemistry to a yellow metal friendly additive package.

The safest thing to do is use either a GL-4 or multi-rated GL-4/GL-5 gear oil. A large portion of the gear oils on the market today are multi-rated.

Thank you everyone for the responses.
I talked to a technical service person at the Mahindra facility in Tomball texas which is just north of spring where I live.
He said that it is not a problem to use GL-5 rated gear lube for the transmission.

Both penzoil and castrol have a gl4/gl5 yellow metal safe gear oil.

Penzoil is called 'gearplus'.

You can search for it's MSDS on their site.

I was under the impression Mahindra moved from Tomball to over by Intercontinental Airport?
