Transmission Fluid

Went to the dealer to get all the fluids and filters - I thought when I was there, that 4 gallons of oil was alot and found out I was correct!

Now, the transmission fluid they gave me is Hy-Guard Low Viscosity TY2200( 4 gallons). We live in PA and I see in the manual it says to use this from 40 - -40 degrees. It sure is not that cold here for the next 7 months.

Should I return that for just the Hy-Guard J20C?

my old JD870 rquired hy guard low viscosity reguardless of the weather.

I ran it in the tractor for 14 years without issue (changed fluid every 2 years).

Yeah, the 2720 manual is sorta contradictory:
Transmission and Hydraulic Oil

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Transaxle is filled with John Deere HY-Gard® (J20C) transmission oil at the factory. DO NOT mix oils.

Do not use type F automatic transmission fluid.
Use Hy-Gard® (J20C) or Low Viscosity Hy-Gard (J20D) transmission oil.
John Deere Low Viscosity Hy-Gard transmission oil is specially formulated for operation below -18°C (0)°F to provide maximum protection for the hydraulic system.
Use oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature range during the period between oil changes.

They start out by saying that it's filled with J20C at the factory, but then use a temperature chart that - if you're going to use the 2720 during a Pennsylvania winter - clearly indicates you should be using J20D. So unless you're gonna park it during the winter, I think you should keep the J20D. Matter of fact, you should probably buy some more:
Fluid Capacities

Fuel Tank 27 L (7.1 gal)
Cooling System 4.0 L (4.2 qt)
Crankcase with Filter 3.4 L (3.6 qt)
Transmission and Hydraulic System 17.5 L (4.6 gal)
Front Axle 3.9 L (4.1 qt)

Actually that temperature chart says -40 - 40 degrees celcius. It is good up to 104 degrees farenheit.

My logic (for a 2520) was this: I spend a LOT more time running the machine in temps between 32 and 100 degrees, so I use the regular Hygard. For some reason, all the dealers want to sell is the low-vis Hygard, so it's probably fine, but I use the J20 C.

Then again, I don't put enough hours on it to change it more than once a year, so I pick what I think works best year-round.

To me, if thicker motor oil provides better protection in the heat, thicker hydro oil should too...

That being said, I wouldn't take the low-vis stuff back, I'd use it up and get the regular stuff next time.
