Checked the transmission fluid on a used tractor the other day and the colour of it was whiteish-yellow and a little bit foamy, but at the proper level.
Didn't see any leaks anywhere.
2 different guys I talked to said that it probably had a little moisture/water in it and that it just needed to be changed ?
Took it for a ride and everything seemed to work fine.
Any other opinions ?

I bought an old backhoe once that had whiteish-yellow and a little bit foamy hydraulic fluid. It had been sitting for a long time and I’m sure needed to be changed. It could be the same with this tractor.

If it is a milky color its probably water in the oil and just needs to be changed. Usually water gets in there through a damaged gear shift boot or a missing breather.

Mark, you did not specify what kind of tractor it was, 2 or 4 wheel drive, age, size, gear or hydro, etc. Tough to make a judgement with limited information.

I have quite a lot of experience with repairing cars, trucks, tractors, fork lifts, etc. and even though you say the tractor drove ok and everything worked, I would be wary of something with fluid as you described. Just my 2 cents worth.

It's a Fiat 55-46 (55 HP), 4WD with loader with 3 ranges (12 forward gears and 3 in reverse). It's got 2300 hrs on it. Seems pretty decent overall.

Oil is cheap..... I would change it and the filter also.. if there is moisture in the fluid, and you live in a cold climate, the fluid can freeze and do a lot of damage. Better to err on the side of caution..
