So I go into the local New Holland dealer today, and inquire about a Side Transmission gasket for my Gearmore E-Series tiller, and he looks it up and says FORTY SEVEN DOLLARS! The gasket is just a thin rubbery thing with bolt holes that I was expecting to be about three dollars at the MOST, so forty seven dollars floored me. Is that really how much these flimsy little things go for? If so, what a racket!

FYI, it's Gearmore part number 070362.

It's pretty easy to cut your own gasket, even without special tools. Harbor Freight sells a set of punches for under 5 bucks to cut the bolt holes, the rest can be handled with a sharp pair of scissors or even some tin snips.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a SouthBend lathe and have cut a few gaskets myself it isn't all that hard to do.

I have even made them using just a ball peen hammer. I wonder what that gasket is made of? Flexible gold?

Sorry, I just had to say that!

I used Harbor Freight RTV sealant on my Iseki tiller because it's a grey market no parts available tiller. The RTV worked great. bjr

I second that. Use RTV blue or orange for most gaskets, even exh manifold.
The only one I can think of that you HAVE to buy is a head gasket. Even
some manufacturers have gone this way. The effort is higher, but RTV
results in less leaks.

IH 7.3 engines, the ones ford use, are mostly glued together with a special rtv, alot tougher than ordinary rtv, ya can get the tubes from IH it appears to be simular to the permatex ultra gray rtv it isnt as rubbery once it sets up, kinda alot tougher and harder, but still not hard like epoxy is. stays a little pliable, its realy tough to clean off parts tho compared to regular rtv

I noticed when using the blue that it didn't have the customary vinegar smell of most RTV sealants.
