Considering your problems, it doesn't sound like a computer (TCU) related problem so a good rebuild is eminent...
How many miles are on the truck? I assume it's over the 60k mile warranty.

Replaced 2 on a 03 Ram 2500 Hemi before 68,000 miles. Also replace one in my old work truck, a early 2000's V6 Dakota at around 105,000 miles.
Never fails, always got to throw in that jab against other trucks.
As long as we're making stuff up, I should add I owned 36 Ford trucks and had to rebuild the transmissions every 10k miles in everyone. :D

No kidding!

The current Dodge truck transmissions are probably better than anything GM or Ford produce from a reliability standpoint. We rarely see any issues.

That is what I am worried about.

Most other trannies are cheap to rebuild. 350 and 400 GM's. 4L60's, C4, C6, aod, none cost more than a few hundred to rebuild and another few hundred for a converter.

@ $3k, it will most likely get a junkyard tranny:thumbsup:
I was a little off in the wording of that post. The $3000 was not just the rebuild. THat included labor for removal and instillation. He was not near home, and had the shop do all the work. Sorry for the confusion.

Well, I talked with my buddies dad (transmission guy), and he said it does sound like it needs a rebuild.

He hasnt done one of these for a while, so he has got to check on prices for a rebuild kit and converter and he'll get back with me. But it doesnt sound like it is going to be too bad. At least no more expensive than a J/Y tranny for $1k i think

Most guys replace too many parts in a transmission because they don't properly diag them.
There is another way to think of this. If you are sinking two days into a major repair, or paying for a bunch of $70/hr auto shop labor, you might as well throw parts at it rather than spend a lot of time figuring out exactly what you need (or don't) or worse, not replace something that should have been.

No jab, just the facts. Never had a issue again with the Dakota after the Jasper. The Ram was just never right. Traded it at 68,000 with issues again.

My point was remans are expensive. I would take my chances with a junk yard unit first after going down that road. Grow up... Its christmas.

It's too much work (especially if it's 4 x4)to remove a tranny & install a J Y tranny which may yeild the same bad results. All the junk yards around me will warranty the tranny to be good. But, won't pay to remove & re install if they give you a bad 1 & have to give you another. You could remove & install 2 or 3 b-4 getting a descent tranny that, may not last very long long. If I have to remove a tranny. It's going to get a rebuild b-4 re installing:thumbsup:

Rebuild is pretty straight forward. The trans is a glorified 4r100. The difference is in the valvebody, or lack thereof. I'd probably replace the line pressure solenoid and check all the apply pistons real carefully. If you're mechanically inclined(you obviously are) you could rebuild that trans yourself with a quality aftermarket kit. Pick up an atsg manual for it and go to town. Pay special attention to the clutch clearances.
Interesting. The Ford Tranny Engineer on FTE said that the 5spd Torqshift in the '05+ was a totally new design, and the new 6spd in the '11+ was another totally new design. Considering that the 5spd was a 2x3 gear set with one feeding the other, it doesn't seem logical that it is anything like the old 4 spd. What are the parts that you say are the same?

The problem the early 5-spds had was a retaining ring that would shift and crack the bell housing creating a leak and other damage. Mine had the repair done under warranty before I owned it. They changed the ring design and replaced the cracked housing on any that failed. Something like that.

OP: You may want to look for a leak if you are down on fluid, and make sure there are no cracks in the housing..

DP has some good info...It would be nice if the jabs were left out...I could use plenty of them myself, but it serves no real purpose.
