Transmission oil change on 739

   / Transmission oil change on 739 #11
This is a very informative thread. I am getting a 853 about 4 years old delivered tomorrow. I plan to change the oil, gearbox oil and all filters, sort of tune it up. Does anyone know of a video to see the gearbox oil changed? I was planning on ordering all parts from Earthtools. Are there any other places that I should consider?

Thanks

Hi bman0023. changing gear oil in 853 is pretty easy. Drain plug is on bottom of transmission. You can pull the dipstick on top of transmission to help fluid drain faster...then take out drain plug on bottom of trans. With tractor level refill to between notches on your dipstick. 80W90 GL-5 EP gear oil is the specification. Any questions or if you need any parts you can contact me at daileysfarm@Hotmail.com or Dailey's Farm & Walk-Behind Tractors - Garden Tiller, Bcs Tillers, Bcs Tractors, Grillo tiller

Ok, thanks. I got the tractor and the fluids all look good. I may hold off on the trans fluid as it looks brand new and so does the oil, but I think I will swap that out in the spring. I have to figure out how to service the 30 inch tiller and Berta rotary plow though. I am wondering if I should use full Synthetic gear oil though in these?

Thanks

If you got that 853 from a dealer who just changed the fluids, great. If you got it from a non-dealer, I would change all the fluids regardless of how they look. But that is just me and I am that way when I get in any used equipment. First thing I do is change all the fluids, so I know what is in there. Chances are that used 853 never had a break in gear oil change anyway. I think few people do that. Whether you run synthetic gear or engine oil in your equipment is a personal preference. It will extend out the intervals between oil changes though.

Ok, yeah I got it used. That is good advice and I should change it out anyways. If I am understanding the oil change there are 2 places to change the engine oil on those Honda's, right? I have 2 dipsticks and 2 drain plugs on each side. I am going to go ahead and change the fluids out in the tiller and rotary plow too.

Thanks

Yes, on the Honda GX390/GX340 there are drain plugs and fill plugs on either side. I find it easier to drain and fill from the right side (viewed when standing in front of tractor looking directly at engine). With engine level, fill to maximum (when oil runs out), then cap it. If there is a dipstick, either cut it off or ignore it. Always run maximum full. On tractor with tractor level, make sure fluid between marks on dipstick. Tiller gear box, with gear box level, fill to half full. Berta single rotary plow: with plow level (sitting on plow share tips, no depth wheel on it), fill until oil weeps out drain plug, then cap it.

Ok, thanks. That really helps me out then. So I only have to change the oil from one side then on the engine? I read something about a reduction part? I thought that I had to change them both out? Is there any gear oil that I have to change on the HD Combo Mower? Or is that only the grease fittings? I plan to keep the BCS for a long time and want to service it well. I got such a good deal on it and am very pleased by it so far.

Thanks again

Definitely consider the use of synthetic oil for both the engine and gearbox as it will extend your drain intervals.
