I have a YM155D...has been working great but recently something has developed with the shift stick on the transmission. It seems to be loose and sloppy (no longer seems to stay in shift pattern). I can still shift it, but it doesn't seem as clean shifting as before. So it feels stiffer to shift, also like it is only going in part way. Sometimes it seems to lock up but then if I lift and reposition the shift stick, I can shift again. Any ideas on what is wrong or how easy it is to fix. I thought about removing the 4 bolts around the shift stick to gain access but am worried something will spring apart and then I will be worse off.

thanks!

Not familiar with the 155 but would think it similar to the 1500. Here is a parts breakdown for it. Items 1 through about 25 would be items that could cause your problem. Sounds like your spring (7) could be broke or weak. Shift lever guide (12) could be worn. Several areas that could cause a problem but would think those two would be first to look at. I think Winston covered the most likely stuff but here's one more that happened to me. It's easy to check for:

Under the shifter boot, there is a rollpin side to side through a ball. The rollpin keeps the lever from revolving. I broke mine and discovered what broke was an undersize replacement rollpin - you really need the metric one. That Metric rollpin was hard to find locally but it only cost $0.75.

You can inspect the rollpin by simply slipping the shifter boot upward, at least on my M240, and I assume yours is the same.

Good luck with this!

thanks for the answers guys! I had a look and this is what I found. No split pin, but there was the remains of a cotter pin that had obviously failed. I have had this 155D for about 3 years now and I guess the previous owner replaced the split pin with a cotter pin. Unfortunately the two slots on either side of where the pin rides up and down in are now worn somewhat. I think the cotter pin head (eye) was catching in the one side.

Once apart I noticed other wear. The (not sure what I should call it) plate that the shifter goes through, that allows it to slide left to right is worn. Also the spring under the shifter ball, was deformed and caught up below that plate. I tried to reform in into the cone shape, but I can't see what stops it from sliding through the plate (which is what happened and allowed it to get wrecked. Did there used to be a washer or something below the spring or is it supposed to sit on that plate. Perhaps if the slot in the plate was not so worn, the spring could not get through. Also, I can see wear on the parts that the shifter ball moves to shift the gears. I don't know what these are called but they don't look easily replaceable.

Next question.....are there parts available somewhere? I would like to replace the plate that holds the shifter on top of the transmission, the one with the 2 worn slots that the split pin should ride in. Also the spring and the shifting plate below. Those I could replace myself.....and might get by for awhile. It would be nice to have the other inner parts that are worn replaced but I imagine that would have to be done professionally. I don't know any tractor mechanics anywhere in the town where I live....not really a farming type community.

you need to contact a Yanmar parts dealer, order a parts manual, determine parts needed, then determine if all parts are available.

Probably some parts dealers listening in. Maybe they will respond. I feel like a phone conversation could settle the matter about availability. I'm guessing the "parts the shifter ball moves" are the shifting forks. You may well have success in just changing the parts you have accessed.

I should have the parts that you need.
