I was looking at the M40 series specs and noticed the tread width specs for the different models. Is the tread width determined by the tires and wheels or are there differences in the front and rear axles?

The thread width is the center to center measurment between the tires. It is not usually determined by the tires and wheels.

In the rear the adjustment is made by mounting the rim to the center disk in different configurations, reversing the disk and/or rim, etc. On 4WD models the front is adjusted the same way, but there are not as many combinations available. There may be a 4WD extension kit available for the front of the M40's to obtain wider settings.

The 2WD front axle is more adjustable, probably the axles slide within a tube.

Any other differences you see among the M40 models are probably due to different axle housing dimensions in the various model sizes.
