Treasury sells more GM stock

I own both GM and Ford trucks and grew up with Fords but I personally like the styling of the Chevy my self. But both make a fine truck and I have no problem with either manufacture. The argument is a non issue because over history many businesses that we use have been bailed out by the government to survive. Why don't you just stop eating, The farming industry couldn't survive with out the government subcidies.

Are you serious? Or is it food would be priced with inflation? Supply and demand.......... No farms no food.

Farming would THRIVE without government subsidies. Take a look at the impact on New Zeeland when they eliminated farming subsidies.

Certain individual farmers may not fair so well but the industry would be better off.

Yeah, I'm with most of you guys. I am not happy about the whole bought-off lobbyist government thing these days, worry it's too far gone to do anything about.

When GM went bankrupt, they also quit investment in new product for quite a while, and I wanted a new truck. So I sold my older Chevy truck (was a good truck) & went shopping. I drove a bunch, ended up with a Dodge for the first time in 25 years. I must say it's the best truck I've ever owned, and they used to be junk with the worst quality record of all makers. I've had it for a year and a half with 21 k miles. I told the wife's boss about it - he went shopping too and picked the same thing.

I'm not happy about Fiat takeover of Chrysler either, but we can blame Daimler for wrecking Chrysler first.

Early posters are right - Alan Mullaly saved Ford at just the right time, but I have never been real impressed with Ford's quality or value.

The asian car makers seem to be doing most everything right - Honda, Toyota, Kia, etc. Too bad the U.S. is so screwed up, the government and corporations. We are turning into a bannana republic.

FYI those loans have been paid off in full long ago...it is/was the obame administration's finagling of GM and a convoluted bankruptcy that did nothing but secure support from the unions that caused the real debacle at taxpayer's expense....

The loans being paid off is true but its dirty money doing it. They paid off the loan money with tax payer money buying over inflated stock thst could not be sold on the free market.

Just taking from one hand and putting into the other.

All of the big 3 have the ability to make great vehicles as well as junk. Such as GM's diesel of the 80s, Ford's 6.0 diesel, Dodge automatics. Then there is the 350 and LS engines, Eco Boost and Cummins diesels. Every manufacturer has its ups and downs. I bought what works for me and fit my budget best, a 2011 4x4 Silverado.

I can't see this thread lasting long. Personally I was done after my 2004 Trailblazer turned out to be a POS. A transmission, rear axle, alternator, spare tire safety latch rusting in 3 years, etc. I'm sure others have had much better luck than I but GM will never sell me a car or truck.

Did the Gov't bail out the banks that loaned Ford billions?

I guess I worded it wrong, but I do care about the bailout. Just not in the way that some people do. It doesn't change my opinion of a company.
All of the big 3 were horribly run. All faced the same fate. All required huge loans. All got huge loans. And I'd be willing to bet that the taxpayers are paying to bail out the big banks that loaned to Ford.

It was a sh***y mess and they were all guilty of bloat and mismanagement.
In Europe we are more or less in the same situation, just if you replace the word company with country, and the names of three US automakers with three EU countries, your statement applies to Europe too...

For Greek politicians its still political suicide to make a fist against Greek entitlement culture where civil workers have extremely high wages compared to the free market worker, get a government pension at age 50 and get loads of other insane benefits: Mostly because the majority of the Greek voters -IS- a civil worker... So the rest of Europe keeps bailing them out because the other European politicians want to hold on to their pan-european dream... And probably keep their own positions in the EU parliament too... The most corrupt parliament within Europe is not that in one of the former Warschau pact Socialist states, but the European parliament itself....

This pan-european dream is never going to work because European countries have very different monetary and tax politics but all market mechanisms are tied together. Greece cant inflate their Drachme (which they no longer have) which would not just make their foreign debt more affordable but the favorable exchange rate would also make a holiday in Greece dirt cheap for people from other economies, which would jumpstart the greek economy (greece has virtually no primary sector economy, just tourism and a monstrous civil sector, which cripples them totally within the EU, and no means to help them other than bailouts)

So i'm with you guys, against bailouts. The free market makes the perfect argument against financial mismanagement, which is just plain and simple: Suffering the consequences. Bailouts make others suffer the consequences while the creators of the problem go on profiting from the benefits...

You dont give a crap about the bailout? You like seeing government stepping in to private enterprise and handing out your and my money?

Its people who think like this that allows GM to stay in business. It boggles me. Lucky for me I will never have to turn another wrench on a GM. My neighbor dumped his Duramax last weekend for a Toyota. Actually cleaned house and sold his Passat also and bought 3 new vehicle's, a Nissan and 2 Toyotas.

You are right Ford got lucky but they also realized there was a problem and fixed it without the Government stepping in. I commend them for that. They did it the right way and on their own plain and simple.

The way I remember it, Ford heard the governments offer and said 'No thank you'.. The others had no choice.
