Big old oak tree fell on my (detached) garage, punching a hole in the roof and busting a few rafters. I'm covered by good insurance, to which I've reported the claim (app-based report with pictures).

The tree is blocking my passage by the garage; should I wait for an insurance person to check it out before I at least clean up the tree parts that aren't on the garage?

Is there a safety factor?,if not I would leave as is just in case insurance agent has questions.

No; we don't *have* to go over there and I grabbed my chain saw out of it just in case. The tree also hit a chicken coop and they've got a hole in their roof too, so I'll definitely cut around there to fix that.

I have similar first hand experience with this. Big oak split and one whole spire went down on twenty by forty eight woodshed that was of little value. It was old and decrepit BUT I had replacement insurance on it.

Spire was separated at base of tree. body and top of tree were on the shed which housed an L 260 Kubota Tractor at the time along with mowers, tools, wood, tons of stuff that was valuable to me. I phoned the agents office on a Friday and left message. Didn't hear JackSchitt from em. I was fuming. I took photos of it all with my digital camera and began some of the removal of debris. It was clear to me from professional experience I needed a crane to get the tree remains off the building to save further damage to equipment, and not get hurt, myself.

I worked all weekend doing what I could. Monday I phoned the agents office and told them in so many words to get their butts in gear and come assess my problem.
The guy apologized up and down, knowing how mad I was. I presented him with photos which showed the removal work I did over the weekend and said I needed a crane. He balked. I said "fine, dude. You can figure on buying me a new tractor and a new mower amongst other things". His tune changed. Long story short, they sprung for an aborist crew, Tandem axle Pete with a crane to remove and clean up the debris. Tractor was saved. Only gear damage was complete hood assembly for LX series Deere riding mower and a metal gas can.

They cut me a check for about fifteen thousand to replace my shed. I was satisfied. So, I say, take your pictures in process. Document your time and go ahead on it.

I had a client who had a huge oak from the neighbors yard fall on her house. It went though her roof, collapsed her porch and broke out her front windows. Tree trimming guys where there that day and had the roof cleared in time for the roofers to tarp it that evening. Roofers did the outside stuff, I did all the inside stuff. Insurance guy didn't show up until it was about halfway done.

Lots and lots of pictures from many angles and as the work progresses is always a very good idea. Even after the adjuster has been to the site. Things show up and or happen that were not allowed for and its best to have everything documented.

Thanks for the responses - I'm busy making sure my wife can walk out to feed the horses without clambering through the new jungle and not have any branches or logs fall on her - I'll leave the 24-30" main trunk on the roof for someone else to deal with!

Not knowing your insurance, or any of them, the agent my client talked to told her over the phone that they would pay what she was charged, but when everyone gave her the bill, the insurance company didn't want to pay. I was offered half of what I charged, and I told her that wasn't acceptable. My price was good and it needed to be paid in full. She went off on the agent and they gave her the money to pay me. The tree guys took a grand off their work, but the roofer also refused to take less and was eventually paid in full. If you are relying on your insurance to pay like they say they are going to, be sure to get that in writing, or be very good at screaming at them until they agree to do what they said they would.

Snap some photos, call the insurance and then do what you need to do to gain access. That shouldn’t be an issue especially if you reached out to them before starting any work. A good insurance company will have an adjuster out quickly and a tree removal service soon after.

Be very careful! You are in California, THAT TREE HAS RIGHTS!
They might appoint it a Public Defender.
