tree planting with FEL/box blade?

1. No, bucket spade would NOT fit over a tooth bar. Spade is a snug fit when slipped on the bucket , then you tighten down the two clamps.

2. The spade is on the far side of the bucket. The first two or three holes I excavated went a little slowly. Soon you instinctively know where the spade is and excavation rate picks up.

The spade is 36" long. So the bucket is normally up high enough so you can see where the tip of the spade is entering the dirt before you begin to move the bucket/spade combination down.

No, I didn't think it would. I'm planning on buying a set of pallet forks eventually though so this would work when I get set up with those. I'm looking at the Paumco thing also (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200356534_200356534) It's less than half the price but much lighter and smaller.

Well I tried the FEL technique after taking a couple passes with the box blade. I think it will work fine for this project. Jeff that spade looks a bit intimidating for my little CK20.

I think your holes look fine. There's fellow who has a radio show locally, called the Dirt Doctor. He recommends digging a "big ugly hole" for tree planting. You put the tree into the hole so that the top of the root ball is even with the top of the soil and gently loosen the roots on the outside of the root ball. Backfill with the same soil that came out of the hole. Here's a link to the Dirt Doctor's website where he has a video about tree planting. It looks to me like you have the hole done.

Well that worked pretty slick, I guess you don't live near me as there's not 3 10 pin bowling ball rocks sitting beside the hole:D I'd stab a bar or pick into the smooth cut side a few times if your soil has alot of clay, just to give the roots a chance to grow that way.

Don't laugh but that is the same size of hole I dig to put in a cedar fence post , (when I randomly need one) I just make sure one end of the hole will match up with distance I want the fence post to be ,, I might dig a foot or more down with a hand shovel and stick that post in that corner so that two sides of post are against mostly undisturbed soil . Then Fill in hole, Drive over it with rear wheels a few times (real close to post) viola post installed.
Trees on the other hand go in middle of hole

Your f.e.l will do just fine. We sell trees to people who use all sorts of digging devices, excavators, augers no.2 shovels actual tree spades. A little bigger hole makes for more permeable dirt for water, nutrients to help the tree to get itself established.

Long as the green part is up, and the root ball is flush with ground 'your trees are b&b aren't they?' The trees dont care. Just long as they get watered after planting.
