Harry, his advice was predicated on selling a useful log of 12-16 feet, which had no side branches on it. The highest/best use for this walnut is veneer and the mill would place the log on a giant lathe to "peel" it [without getting into a discourse on the different types of veneers]. With fence going 4-6' high then the log becomes too short to use. I would think that some smaller part of that walnut could be put to some kind of use by someone as furniture, etc. except I've offered some walnut and cherry "chunks" to some local artisans and they turned it down. As you said any bit of metal will damage a chain saw or an expensive piece of milling machinery. My forester is reputable and few of my trees are ready for harvest so I see no reason to disbelieve his advice.
