Tree Removal Question

Rand Lumber in Rye NH will convert your logs to boards with one caveat.. If they have a nail/rock or other hardware present that damages the saw blade you will pay for the resharpening..

A few people out my way (on the coast) will pick these up and deliver to the sawyer and in turn you get the boards. Cost is about $.20 bf for them to convert into lumber for you.

It is too bad the original deal didn't work out, did you have a contract? Yes leaning trees are definately widow makers and can kill. where are you and these trees located, as I have good contacts in the business here in my area. If you are close I will come over and look to give you my opinion.

I had some luck today. As it turns out my neighbor had a landscaper come over to deliver some fill and level an area of his yard. The landscaper (Mark and his assistant) had a JD 410C. He told me he had time to work at my place as the fill delivery truck was delayed. He pulled down the hung up trees, then we noticed that the original logger also left two large hemlocks standing with felling notches cut into them! Well, Mark took a running start at them with his JD and, after several attempts, knocked them over, roots and all. It was something to see.

After that, I limbed many, many trees and cut them into big logs, while Mark stacked them in a huge pile next to the driveway. Some of the logs were over 25 ft. long. Not knowing how the logs might be used, I figured I would leave them long so as not to ruin them. The work took seven hours today, and I estimate another two hours tomorrow.

I now realize there were a lot more trees than I listed in my original posting. I think it would make up a sizable load on a logging truck.

Mark was very skillful and helpful. Over the course of the day I saw him get his machine do some pretty amazing things, including some I’m sure it wasn’t designed for.

woodmills1, I am in Milford, NH. I sure could use some advice in finding a sawmill and a way to get them there. Regards, Larry.

cbf30,

If you are going to saw the trees into lumber there is a "paint"
that can be used to seal the ends of the logs to prevent or
lesson checking/cracking. I can't think of the name of the
products, I have never used them, but I have seen the
advertised in forestry magazines. You might want to see
if you can find an online retailer that would have the stuff.

There is a timber/forestry related website that has been
mention on TBN in the past. I don't have it book marked but
you should be able to find it if someone else does not pipe
up with the reference. They should be able to help you if
you have questions about things to do to preserve the wood
if you choose to have them sawn.

Hope this helps,
Dan McCarty

Baileys-online.com sells their brand of log seal; 5 gallons for $42. Haven't used it.

I would guess there is someone in you area that has a portable sawmill who my be intrested in sawing your trees into lumber either for you or themselves.

I have a portable mill but I don't know what part of the country you are located in. I have a site to check out today that was logged recently and the landowner has a few logs he wants cut up.

Getting rid of the logs will be easier than getting rid of all the limbs and tops.

You are not that far away.... as he mentions in a couple of posts back, he is in Milford, NH.

But it would be advantageous for him to fill in his profile. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

CBH30,

Call Steve Wilkins in Mont Vernon. He has removed trees for me in exchange for the lumber. Straight white pines and hemlock are marketable logs.

went to the location of the logs this morning to look see. some good wood and the backhoe operator did a good job for a non woodsman. just too bad they are sort of ina hole. Have a log truck with a rear mounted grapple lined up tentative for next monday. I will be there to chain any that are to far for the loader to reach, and to buck them to length. should be able to post pictures of the loading and then of the cutting at my house will make an interesting story for TBN stay posted.
