tree roots from a sugar maple are causing me havoc, I wonder if a coulter wheel or disk at each end of the tine assembly would allow the tiller to float over the roots instead of snaggin and stalling the tiller, thoughts or suggestions ( other than do not till beside a ground out tree stump)

Root size?

If you have lots of roots, I would rig up a soil ripper and rip the ground to both cut the roots and break their hold on the ground.

For smaller roots, I have occassionally sharpened the bolo tines on the PT tiller. It doesn't last long, but it does help the tiller chip away at bigger roots. I just try not to force it.

I don't think a coult wheel would help much, since roots tend not to be all that level. (But I've never tried.)

(I have no idea how much you are up against it. Sugar maples can put out some big roots, and some extensive web roots.)

All the best,

Peter
