Tree Shear

Does anybody here have any experience with the tree shear attachment for the 425 series? I'm curious how well it works and what tree sizes it can handle in actual practice. I know it's pricey but I've got 14 acres of woods to thin out so it could be well worth it.

I would call up Power-Trac if you don't get an answer here. I asked Scott about it and he said that tree farmers like it. You can put an extension on it and cut high branches without a ladder. That alone might be worth it. On the other hand a chain saw is a lot cheaper. Also, I would be careful about trees falling on you. How do you control them?

Yeah, before I talked to Scott I was hoping to hear from someone that had some time with it. Most of what I have to clear out are under 12 feet tall so I'm not to worried about the falling factor. And I could do it with a chain saw but with 14 acres of them the ole knees aren't what they used to be. Plus I'd be missing all that seat time.

I had bought the brush cutter with this in mind for a lot of the smaller 4 to 5 footers and it does do them quite nicely. The problem I have found is the brush cutter does not move well on uneven ground like I have in the woods. The small tires get hung up in the depressions and then the tractor rides up on it.

I think what I'll be doing is to sell the brush cutter to help finance the tree shear. Less than 5 hours on it but I can see that it is not an attachment that works for my land.

This is a hydraulic small tree cutter That I built from parts that I had. It is 3/4 in thick 6 in wide steel. The long steel piece has a knife edge. and the top has a flat edge. I can cut in any direction by pulling the unit off the 2 in box steel and reposition, It can cut vertical, horizontal, and upside down for some root cutting. It can cut about 4 in at the tip. Right now it is mounted on my forklift frame, and can be extended with an adapter. Don't know how high I can cut at this moment in time. I will experiment further. These parts can be acquired for around $200.00 the ability to weld is a plus. The aux control valve gives me the hydraulics.

Thanks. The reason is that of all the machines that I have, Pt-1445, Ford 8N, Magnatrac, Kubota, I like the PT more, simply because I can do more with the PT than all the others, and I have a lot more attachments, and can make more. I especially like the hydraulic aspect. Hydraulic systems are very strong and trust worthy. I am working on several more attachments. It's a good hobby to have. As that comedian says, GET ER DONE.

I love it. This looks like it would be a good choice to attach to the 2 inch receiver plate. Normally I don't try to make what I can buy, but PT's price on this very simple attachment seems way out of line.
My limited skills might work on this.

Bob, this does plug into a 2 in receiver, I made an L adapter to position it to most any direction. With an extension, it could be lifted up into trees to trim limbs.
