Maybe not, but my understand is that the laws are clearly different in this regard from other states. That is, (I guess) the extent to which you can go to protect your property.
Here in Canada, it's always a case of only using reasonable force against a given threat.
I'm curious, if you could lawfully point a firearm at a Trespasser in Texas or even utter a threat. Here, that would get you arrested, have your firearms taken away, and denied firearm ownership for life.
Also curious, when anything posted on TBN had to have absolute validity, because, that could be a problem.

So, and again this is from vague, old memory and information, how did that Texan get off shooting that foreign kid at Halloween? The one that (apparently) spoke no English and didn't stop approaching the house when warned.

Well, it wasn't in Texas. It was Louisiana. The Japanese kid did speak English, more or less, but didn't seem to understand the word "Freeze" he just laughed and kept on approaching. And yes the homeowner was acquitted of criminal charges, but there was a civil suit that he didn't fare so well in. You can read about it here.

Here in Ohio anyone can legally carry a firearm externally as soon as its covered up its now concealed and needs a special license. CCW license and I do carry one.
To make this particular point I will just say outdoors, I won't go into the laws of carrying into a business ext.
The only reason that it's justified to kill someone with a firearm is if all other methods have been used and your life is in danger. That's it.
If the man runs away and you shoot him, it's murder. If you use your own hot ammo they can get you on intent to kill or something like that.
I only use store bough ammo that anyone can buy and I would not fatally harm someone unless they also had a firearm or had a knife in close range to me and I had no other means of escape. If I can get away with shooting a perp in the shoulder or leg, out running that person and call the law that's what I'm gonna do. If they can prove you shot to kill your going to jail for a very long time, for example you empty the clip in someone, there gonna get you on that ext.
I'm licensed to carry in over 30 of the 50 states, I don't travel west so I can not say what there laws are but here in the states unless your life was in a immediate danger and they can prove you had another option other than to discharge your firearm, your most likely gonna do some time.
Another fun fact, if I'm carrying concealed and decide to put that firearm in the glove box of my car and walk into a store, I believe that's a felony now, the firearm and ammo had to be in separate compartments of the vehicle. I can carry it on me legally but if I store it in the car it has to be locked up or both firearm and ammo out of reach and impossible to put the two together inside the car.

Here in Wisconsin I can carry a hand gun in my truck without it holstered and it can be loaded. We also have the Castle Law the week offender land and house and car if need be and you can use deadly force and people have used it in the past and none have going to jail as far as I know.

The fact that he hid the bodies tells us all we need to know. At least in Indiana you can only use deadly force if the trespasser is in your home or on your yard immediately around your home. So out in the back 40 no. Unless of course the use of deadly force was necessary to protect yourself or others from death or injury.
In any of those cases if you don't immediately call 911 you are (a) a deplorable human being and (b) probably going to be know as "the defendant" for quite some time.
There is far more to this story than we know. Probably the mental health of the shooter is an issue.
