Posting for me is a small paper fence, if i wanted to keep people out i would barb wire it, or put trail cams up and file reports against people who tresspassed. but spending 10 dollars for some papers and staples is a lot easier and cheaper.
But that paper is what gives the landowner, at least in NC, the ability to charge for tresspass. A fence around the woods or field won't do it. The paper will.
We own the land on both sides of a road. Where we own both sides we have a gate. Depending on the state of the posted signs we have two on the gate, one next to the gate in a roll of wire, and another sign on a tree. With a gate, fence and these signs ya would think it would be obvious to not come on our land?
The roll of wire is there because a local teenager rode an ATV around the gate, signs and survey markers one winter. I had a long chat with his mom one very cold morning and he never came back.
I know for sure that someone drive a few car lenghs passed our open gate one day and emptied a dirty cat litter box on our land. I suspect it has happened twice. If I find it a third time I'll get a trail camera and catch them. The picture should make it easy to figure out which person in the subdivision is doing this. A quick know on their door and/or a vist with GIS will give a name. With said name and pictures a trip to the magistrate will provide a warrent for tresspass and littering.
If it is a teenager I'll talk to the parents. If its an adult they will be getting a visit from a deputy serving papers.
The lot sizes in the subdivision are 2-6 acres. If they want to dump their cat scat they have their own land to do so. They also have garbage service. Or they could do what we do which is to take the trash to the dump which is very convienient and free. Over the years people used to dump their landscape trash on what is now our land. They also dumped tires and some trash that I'm still finding and cleaning up.
Without those cheap paper signs I could not get the tresspass. The littering would still be valid though.
And a fence won't always keep them out.
