Similar experience here. I currently have both 4320 OS and 3720 cab and the 4320 is much louder when standing along side of either. Of course the 3720 is much quieter inside the cab.
Yep, i was standing just outside my garage and next to eh exhaust side of the 3520, and I was kinda startled as to how loud the 4310 was in comparison. It actually sounded like a much larger tractor. you could still jhear the 3520, but it sort of background noise to the 4310.

Ya, my 4720 is loud. I try and wear ear plugs whenever possible, it makes my ears ring. I've ordered the vertical exhaust kit, mainly for the nauseating fumes in my face when I work into a headwind, but also the sound.

I'll let you guys know what it does once it's on.

My front facing exhaust was quieter than a rental vertical stacked same model.

Bigger engines, bigger torque has to come from somewhere. I think most of the noise is from the engine, not the exhaust. Exhaust makes a contribution, but I don't think it is the main culprit.

I leave a set of ear muffs on the tractor.

Many of us are waiting in the wings to see how the vertical exhaust kit works. Please do let us know.

Will do. It's not due in for a couple of weeks. PM me as a reminder if you guys haven't heard from me by the end of the month.

Well, I got the vertical exhaust kit on yesterday. Only took about 30 min, pretty painless. It looks good. It's not any quieter though... :(. The majority of the noise seem to come from the engine itself, not out the pipe. Mine has a very sharp, crackling kinda tone to it. Bottom line is keep the plugs in the fender toolbox and stop your ears from ringing.

It does seem a bit better with regard to the fumes. I haven't been on it for an extended period yet, but when I do I'll post.

Something I was wondering before I got is was how will the hood tilt with it on?? Well, there's a joint at the level of the hood that just wiggled on and off without tools, so it's pretty easy. There's a tab that sets the rotation of the pipe at 90, 180, etc.
Hope that helps.

Jer, thanks for sharing your experience with your new vertical exhaust. Sounds like you should still use hearing protection which is true for most tractors anyway except for cab models.
Venting the diesel exhaust gases up and away may still be a good reason for installing. Let us know your thoughts.

I agree, the JD Powertech engines are loud. The yanmar on my little 2305 purrs...it is a sweet sounding deisel compared to my 4720...which is loud and has an unpleasant "mechanical" sound for the ears. I guess that goes with the territory for more HP.
