I have scheduled a trip to Tazewell for January 24 and hope that I can report that I have made a purchase.

I'm not looking for encouragement but advice on what I should be looking for and perhaps what I should convey to the management of PT about what I am reading on this forum.
I hope to be able to take the maintenance class and would welcome comments on areas to pay particular attention to or questions I might want answered.

My intended attachments include 4 in 1, box blade, rough mower, mini hoe, forks, post hole and probably a trencher.

I look forward to hearing comments and promise I will keep meticulous notes that I can share with others as the needs arise.

As you have heard from others, when taking the maintenance course you want to ask questions as you go along. I had my wife take notes as the questions were answered so that I could concentrate on what was being said. Test each of the attachments so that you are sure of what they can do. I ended up changing from one size to another because of testing. They are great people at Tazewell, you will be developing a friendship so that when you make a phone call it will be on a more personal level.
Enjoy the experience and have fun.

My wife is coming along and was wondering what she would do with herself - now I know what to tell her. She can take the notes and then when it comes to the maintenance I can ask her to do the work since only she can read the instructions. Sounds like a plan. Seriously, thanks for the insight.

She'll eye each attachment, asking if it can accomplish this or that task [which will then get added to your honey do list!]. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have fun! Oh, and just buy a 2430 or 45 or 60 so the TBN X4XX dominance can be slightly diluted! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When you take the class, use the machine that you are buying (yes, that exact machine) as the demonstration model. Also drive that machine around for at least 10 minutes. We found two minor problems with mine during the class. One was a missing tie wrap, and one was the dip stick on the hydraulic reservoir cap was missing.

I had not wanted to buy a machine that I had muddied while driving, but you make a good point about going through the class with the exact machine since it would be a final QC look.

Thanks for the advice.

My maintenance class focused on just the tractor and I never thought to ask many questions about the attachments. Since PT is not big on written instructions for their tractors (and none for any attachments that I know about) think about questions for each attachment in terms of "before use", "during use", "after use" and maintenance.

As was recently mentioned in another thread they suggested "before use" oiling of the trencher blade for example. "During use" questions would be best asked during your hands on time. I am sure some implements have "after use" or short/long term storage recommendations that may not be obvious to some.

Hopefully this helps brainstorm some questions for you.

On the rough cut mower, there is a grease fitting for the center main bearing. Be sure that they show you where it is. A friend did not know it required greasing (or that there was a fitting there) and had his lockup. He greased it and it is working fine now, but I doubt that this increased the life of the bearing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have printed them and will have them at hand when I am there.

I've looked VERY closely for that grease fitting on the brush hog (that IS the same as "rough cut" mower, isn't it?). I can't find one. Either we are talking about different mowers... or PT has changed the design... or I need to look harder.

The hydraulic motor is the only part that is above the deck and it should be lubricated by the hydraulic fluid, as is the stump grinder.

If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me so I can get that thing lubed!!
