That line made me think of the post operative recovery. So far, this conversation has been about the person who has had the surgery. The other side of the coin is that there will be family members and/or friends taking care of the patient after the operation. They need some attention too since they will have to be taking care of themselves and you. In my experience with too many family surgeries to count, the worst part of the operation for the patient's family is when the patient is in the recovery room. Everyone of my family members has had a difficult time coming out of the anesthesia. They would moan, grown, cry, and say things that can be disturbing. This can be very upsetting to the family member(s) who are in the recovery room. I don't know if this is common but it seems to occur at least frequently from listening to other patients in the recovery room while my family members were coming out of the drugs.

Flip side is that the patient does not remember much, if any, of the angst they were going through. Which is a good thing. I had one family member who when being taken from the recovery room asked another family member to apologize to the nurse because he had cussed her out. This family member never would have said something nasty to anyone but the drugs messed him up. This is the only family member who remembers anything from the recovery room.

After sitting in the recovery room way too many times, my theory is that the drugs turn off the brain's filters and all of the anxiety, fear, etc, the patient had before surgery, erupts, and maybe is magnified by the drugs, as the anesthesia wears off. It is not pleasant to watch.

This happened with a family member who just had by pass surgery and it was very upsetting to the other family member in the recovery room. I told them to leave the room and let the nurse handle the situation. There really is not much one can do if this happens except deal with it and I only know of one family member who remembers only a small part of the recovery. It just seems to be part of the process but given it is after a very stressful time on the patient, but especially the family members, the time in the recovery room can be very, very difficult on the family.

It would not be a bad idea to ask the doctors about this and mention that this might happen to whomever will be in the recovery room with you. Hopefully it does not happen, and if it does, it really is just part of the process, but if one has never experienced it before, it can be unpleasant.

Later,
Dan

You're absolutely correct about coming out of the anesthesia.

I had my triple bypass three weeks ago. Pre- surgery, the heart care staff gave a tour of the facilities including the CVU recovery.

Not a pretty sight. My ONLY family member is a sixteen year old daughter. After discussing with the nurses we agreed that it would be best she DIDN'T visit until al least Day 2.

A visit in my case would have accomplished squat. I was so out of it I didn't know what was going on anyways. Plus immediately PRIOR to surgery I felt at ease knowing my daughter wouldn't have to see me that way.

Back in 2005 I went in for a triple bypass. One artery was either too small or it was in a spot they couldn't get to, I don't remember which. One closed up after 2 days. the third was a success. On me they did a beating heart bypass. They never stopped my heart to do the surgery. I still remember to this day waking up in ICU. My wife and my 2 boys were there. I was still on a ventilator to help me breathe. I called one son over and motioned for him to come over to the bed. I grabbed that vent tube with one hand and made a scissor motion with my other hand. He looked at me bewildered. Then I pointed over my head to the shelf behind the bed. I wanted him to cut that tube. Now how did I know there was a pair of scissors on that shelf. It was behind the bed. But anyway it's been 12 years since I had it done. I live every day with some angina. But I am still working my 8 hour a day job.
You have pay strict attention to the post-op instructions. They know what they're doing. Walk when and how far they tell you to. Driving and stairs are taboo for a while.

Do not give it a try. Do it enthusiastically. Heart disease is a food born disease. Forks Over (surgical) Knives.

Txdon,

Our appointment with the nutritionist is Thursday but I have already lost 5 pounds just by eating right. Nothing unusual but just cut back on snacks but just a little ice cream at night instead of a full bowl with chocolate sauce. Plus an apple or pear instead of potato chips. When you think about it, it is amazing how much junk food I would eat.

Not having been there with the heart problems but 'give up bacon' Not sure that I'd rather die :)

Most people feel that way, that is why Heart Disease is the # cause of death in the U.S. Sadly it is also a very preventable disease. Oh by the way there is a 50% chance you will survive your heart attack, (I did, my Brother did not) it all depends on which side of the heart the plaque breaks off of. If on the right a 2 hour window of slow death but intervention is available but the left side is quick (also called the widow maker). Many people with heart disease do not have heart attacks but then they can look forward to stents and bypasses in their retirement years or sooner. I don't know about the rest of the people with heart disease but I am mad at the American heart Association for being so lax when it comes to diet and heart disease. You would almost think they are a government/political agency, oh wait they are.

Up date.
Surgery was 9/28 so 6 days post op as of right now.
Released 96 hours almost to the minute from the 7 hour surgery to go home. Ah, no incessant beep beep beep and constant noise and lights.
Feeling better than expected but they weren't kidding about the six to eight week recovery. Eat, shower, walk a few steps, pee, and done.. Nap time.
Thanking all the TBN members for your input. Doc says I'm good for another 15 years after 4 by passes and a new valve overhaul soooo, not giving up the bacon, just not eating a pound at one time.
