Triumph Motorcycle?

Ah Bultaco's!!! I had an early 70's model with the fiberglass gas tank seat combo. It sure was strange starting that thing with the left side kick starter. The first time I rode it I almost hit a car as the brake/gear shifter were backward from what I was used to. Once you hit first, stepping on the gear lever will do you no good... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Cushman motor scooters were plentiful in my part of the country in the early and mid-50s. I sure wanted one when I was 14, but Dad vetoed that idea in a hurry. And if you had enough money, you got the Cushman Eagle, the top of the line.

Incidentally, I have a cousin who still has his 1956 3hp Sears scooter (I can't remember whether they called it a Sears or a Craftsman).

I think the Cushman that my childhood friend had, his name was Gary Greyshaw, had a transmission like the one in the picture but I can't remember how you shifted it. I think it had 2 speeds.

Talk about deja-vu, my brother-in-law sent me an e-mail this afternoon. He bought a motorcycle, his first in 20 years. Not a Triumph or Harley but a Honda Shadow. He said he was going to re-learn motorcycles and next year get something else. Whatever I have must be contagious.

The last time I renewed my drivers license, I dropped the motorcycle endorsement so I wouldn't be tempted to catch it again myself.

I remember the Cushman Eagle mostly because some bullies down at the end of the road, they were like 18-22yo, beat up my brother who was about 8yo. They rode Cushmans and had been terorrizing us on our bicycles. My dad and uncle then went down there and beat them all up. Later my cousins who were several years my senior were bored and decided we was not even yet and went back down there and beat them all up over again /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thereafter it was a family tradition to go and beat those guys up whenever shooting at yankees became unfullfilling /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Last thing my oldest cousin did before leaving for Vietnam was go down there and beat them all up once more and then heartily apoligize to them for all the beatings he had given them, he never came home from Vietnam.
In any case, I now see why Honda is the Number 1 in the world, a lawnmower engine, slip clutch and no suspension---humph. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif J

I promise that the only way I will ever visit with you is on this site. Seeing as I am a "Yankee", I certainly don't want to get "shot" at or beat up either. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Actually, that's kind of why I haven't ridden a scooter for about 12 years.

My wife and I took our Harley FLT to a rally in Hot Springs, Arkansas about 12 years ago. On the way down, somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line, on the interstate, a southern (should I say good old boy), attempted to end our lives with his pickup truck. Must have been our Michigan license plate.

Needless to say, my wife will never ride again. In fact, she flew home from Hot Springs. I have her blessing on the Triumph, however, she adamantly states "I am not going to get on the back of that motorcycle".

I know one thing. I'll not ride south of the Mason-Dixon Line in anything but my car. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sounds like you should be carring a double 12 with 16 in. barrels.

You might be right. When I was a young Seaman Deuce in the US Navy, I had a 1964 VW. I was driving from Maryland to Texas with my first child and wife in the car with me when two "fine Alabama gents" in a pickup decided to have some fun with the little VW. They would pull in front of me and slow down until I went to pass, and then swerve at me. Finally, someone else in a bigger truck saw what they were doing and pulled ahead of me. Since the odds weren't so much in the good ol' boy's favor, they chickened out and turned off the highway. I've often wondered if it was the VW or the Maryland plates that made me their target. I was sure grateful to the folks who came to my rescue. ...and by the way, the rescuers were Alabamans too. It's not the state, it's just the mentality and isolation of some of these rural places that allows things like this to happen and go undetected. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
