If memory serves me correctly, the German Messersmidt was the first Jet prototype. US forces encountered Russian Migs in Korea.

I was thinking of the HE 178, but am not sure that is what is being asked for here.

Werner Von Braun worked for Messersmidt and started the V-2 program. Te US Space program was headed by him.

But that was late in WWII. The first turbojet flight was in 1939, and was the HE 178. I think Germany had stuff in the works, but it wasn't in public view. The first really publicized jet flight was in Italy, but it wasn't truly the first, just the first being publicized. :confused3:

OK lady You got it. The plane was powered by a Piston engine, driving a "Ducted Fan" Mfg By "Caproni". Not a great success but it did fly.
Some place I have a picture of it, specs, & date it flew. Current "Fan Jet" engines are the same principle, just much improved.

Military transports had something very different than civilian passenger planes. At least in the 50's & 60's. Talking real seats, not jump seats.

But just as with other round engines, Lycoming was second place to Pratt and Whitney in reliability.

Pratt 4360 may be the largest actually being used in aircraft, before round engines became "obsolete".

Round engines are my FAVORITE!

Talking about "Boot Hill" in Tombstone AZ.

You are correct it hiad been closed for many years.
The old man buried there in 1944, was in the process of restoring the cemetery. That is why he was buried there.
Funny in a sick sort of way. The hearse bringing him to the funeral, blew both rear ties and went off a bank & down into a gully.
Took almost 2 hours for him to finally arrive. Whats that old saying "He will be late to his own funeral".

Here is a good question.
There was a Navy plane that flew 11,236 miles, non stop & not refueled. It also took off from a carrier deck, but not on that flight.
