I replaced the fuel pump today and it runs great now.
The JD replacement fuel pump came with an extra nipple, a hose, a clamp and instructions on how to route the hose to carry gas away from the exhaust when the new pump fails. Clearly JD has acknowledged the issue with fuel spraying on the exhaust when the fuel pump fails but has chosen to charge us $130 for the privilege of not having our mowers burn up.
