I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 quad cab truck with an 8' bed with a Leer cap. My problem is that it's too heavy for another person and myself to put on and take off. How does everyone do it? Planks and sawhorses? To the top edge of the truck bed is 57" which is pretty high to lift to. It seems that nobody is around to help put it on or take it off. Any ideas would help a lot.

I get under mine in the bed, center it on my shoulders and walk it off (straight back across the tailgate) onto an adjacent retainer wall or shelf rack in the garage. Tops aren't that heavy (but that is relative to everyone). Slow and easy it the key. Takes just a moment to move it back onto another support for storage.

I watched the topper dealer place it on during initial installation with a fork lift with an extension (custom homemade gadget he used).

I unfasten mine, then from inside of the cap, I lift one corner at a time and insert a 2x4 across the front and then another across the back. The 2x4's I use are cut long enough to grab with straps hooked on rafters in my garage. Once all 4 corners are hooked, I ratchet each one high enough to drive out from under the suspended cap.

When I had a truck with a cap, I sank 4 pressure treated 4x4s into the ground corresponding to the four corners of the truck bed, leaving enough space to back the truck between each pair. I also nailed a 2x4 between the front and rear post on each side. When i wanted to remove the cap, I would climb into the bed, unbolt it, then lift the front half, and slide a 2x4 between the cap and the bed slides, with each end resting on the 2x4's nailed to the 4x4's. Repeat this at the rear, then drive the truck out from under. One man removal! Reverse process to reinstall.
