Had one with similar problems and it turned out to be the combination switch.

I've torn the column apart and tried to diagnose it. I just don't have the time to try and fix my daily driver. And at 178K miles, I need to make a move to something more reliable.

My wife and I are shopping for a new truck now. The truck that we were negotiating was sold this morning. There is one more that I hop e to be posting about tomorrow!

Check the condition of the back side of the 7 pin trailer plug (if you have one)...Had a similar issue with a 97 Chevy.

If you think it is the 7 pin plug, try unplugging it where it comes out of the harness near the spare tire.

The 4 wheel drive indicators may be the button itself, I had to replace one on my '99 GMC. Although putting it in and out of gear makes me think that it is something else.

In the GM trucks there is a black box called the body control module that is involved in just about everything like that. A scan tool that has the GM tests in it should be able to test that module. Unfortunately the normal troubleshooting that you would perform doesn't apply. In my GM truck it is located below and to the left of the steering column but mine is a 2000.

It sounds like it could be your trailer plug has salt in it and when you step on the brakes the power going to the trailer is shorting out to your turn signal and energizing it as well. Just a guess though. I know I always have to replace the 7 pin connector every couple of years because salt gets into them and destroys them.

The trailer plug or ground wire was the first thoughts I had too, so I unplugged all wiring at the harness connections (a 4 plug port near the spare tire) to clean and check. With all unplugged and the indicator on for a right turn, it still blinks the third brake light. This eliminates the trailer plug, and wiring/grounding issues on either tail lamp.

Chasing this down further, I have to agree with glkingar. Directional controls and tranfer case commands pass through the body control module. It also explains why my gear selector display is dim and not responsive sometimes, and the occasional dead passenger side door. Grounds have recently been cleaned and checked.

If this was not my daily driver, I'd park it and fix the small stuff. This isn't the only issue, but most things are very minor and common on a near 200K mile truck. But I need to get to work and job sites without fail. So I bought a new truck.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll post a new thread about the new truck with photos, once I take delivery on Tuesday.
