This project started with me coming across this unit a couple months ago.

I already did a dump trailer and have been working on the farm truck, after rebuilding the AC compressor I decided to make a hay mover for it that I could easily remove when not in use.

I came across this double acting cylinder with a bent shaft and decided it looked close to what I was looking for.

After straightening the shaft, I installed new o-rings and seals. I have a bunch of short -8 Aeroquip 3000 psi lines but the hydraulic unit uses metric fittings. So I just mated the pump side of their fitting to AN fittings I had in the drawer.

A couple gallons of fluid and a battery and I now have that part ready to go.

Aside from having both hydraulic connections at the same end this cylinder also has a pin off the face that can be depressed with an adjustable stop, on the shaft, I could use to adjust the stopping angle of the bale going up.

Use gooseneck hitch and a 12 v winch. I wouldn't fool with hydraulic.

Looks good, and I admire the "operating room" looking shop!😁
Keep us updated with the results especially the dang near free hydraulic unit.👍

Sure do! I have a dirt floor and a leaky ceiling. 😝

Yeah, $160 used to be expensive but now I can’t fill up an empty truck for that.

I spaced the ram 3/8“ above the 2x3 box tube, I am going to use between the rear of the bed and the gooseneck hitch and cut a cardboard template.

Then made another template off of that one from a hunk of wood on the floor, for my pantograph machine to follow.

A corner “drop“ from my roller project was just the right size. The pantograph makes short work of clean up. These are “as cut”.

Cut two, 1/2” plates instead of one 1” because I had the right size drop and in the end a single 1/2” plate would do the job but two fit the clevis on the cylinder.

For the rear pivots I use 3/4” plate and Flanged oillite bushings.

I wish I had made the pantograph in my early days, sure would have saved a lot of grinding wheels.

My hitch came in and I chopped it up.

Then poked around through my “junk”, as Mrs. Morris would call it and found a bit of 1/2” plate and some 3/16 wall rectangle box tubing.

I made this video of it a few years ago that is worth a thousand words.

The most important parts are that the arbor that drives around the template must be true. Motor shafts are good but it’s got to be perfect or —————- on your template turns into ~~~~~~~~ on the steel. The second is that the arm swing across the work area and remain the same distance above the work piece.
