truck payload rating system in america ?

Ok, bringing this back up.
With our trailer @ 3200lbs+, loaded with 80 bales of hay and another 26 in the bed of the truck, it towed just fine. I would guess the bales are around 30-40lbs ea. Approximately a 70 mile round trip, mostly highway. 65mph was easy to hold without serious downshifts. I'm pleased.

Yea, it will pull that load no problem. Its a 7,000# load and using the average of 35# per bale. I don't think you exceeded your limits or if you did by very little. Your truck will work just fine for what you are doing. In the summer, 100 deg day, you will see it really work.

100 bales of 40 pound is 2000 pound. plus 3200 pound is 5200 pound. Thats 2358 kg...
I've towed that weight (tractor) with my 140hp TDI Volvo, at 70 mph (110 kmh) 5th gear 2200 rpm... Combined vehicle weight would be 3900 kg or 8600 pounds... For that, the 140 hp 2.5 works just fine, and what makes me even happier is that it used just a wee bit more than 1 liter of diesel per 10 km on the highway that trip..

Now when i'm pulling a large frontal area (stack of haybales) against the wind, i'd rather stick to the manufacturers tow rating of 1600 kg (3527 pounds).....

Thats correct, its hard to calculate in pounds while thinking in kilos 100 bales of 40 pound would roughly be 2000 kg....

...While reworking the rest of the calculation, i'd rather leave that load of haybales to your truck, because it would be a scary ride for me...
