Truck PTO, anyone have one?

I have an '03 1 ton Duramax with 5 speed Allison auto trans.
Soon after I bought it I got the dash mounted PTO control... INTENDING to <not sure, but it seemed like a need would present itself, so I had better be ready for it>

Anyway; It works, gives me a high idle when I want it and "integrates" with the cruise control.

All very nice, not a lot of money as I recall, and maybe SOME DAY that need will present itself - or maybe not.

I have a PTO driven hydraulic pump on my '04 F350 manual 5 speed. You can then use the hydraulics to power whatever you want...air compressor, welder, generator, or in my case I only use the hydrulics to drive a winch (3,000 lb single line and 12,000 lb when 4 parted).

Not all trucks have the PTO option, it has to be installed at the factory. The cover may be there but when you pull the cover off there will be a special gear designed to mesh with the PTO.

If you truck still has the build numbers some where you could check on it that way.

Or crawl under the truck and look for a 6 bolt cover plate about 7" tall x 4" wide oriented with the long dimension vertical.

Rig trucks up quite often with PTO's for many different reasons, mostly they drive hydraulic systems but still quite a few for bigger winches and pump systems. Like was stated most of the newer smaller trucks have to be specd out to have a trans drive gear AND enough clearance for the application. The larger trucks have to be specd for the DPF canister mounted behind the cab or you will not have enough room for more than 1 PTO. Most smaller trucks are limited with a auto trans as far as how much torque and hp you can get out of the pto. Nothing beats a direct drive winch! CJ

I think the '94-02 Dodge 3500 4x4's had the 241DHD transfer case, which had a PTO provision. I've been trying to find one for a hydraulic winch, before I swap in a 241 DHD to replace the 241 DLD (Dodge Light Duty).

We have a C30 1960 Chevy Apache truck that we have a PTO to run a hydraulic pump which we use for a dump box we added.

I once built a 15 Kw pressure washer on the pto of a Volkswagen Crafter (Merc Sprinter with VW engine and badge) for a company that removed graffiti. Went to 1400rpm as soon as PTO was engaged. Exhaust damper had to be rerouted in order to make it any use.

Those are now live power taken from between the engine and transmission . Have thier own clutch. A beefy drive operate some pumps at 1200gpm and 150psi.
Haven't looked recently but a few years ago the GMC 3500 had to be ordered with the optional ring gear to drive a bolt on pto.
