Truck PTO, anyone have one?

The old transmissions had side plates that you removed and installed pto adapter which was a gear that ran off of the cluster gear in the trans. It could be shifted in and out of gear. Not synchronized so if you didn't engage with engine off or clutch they would grind.
Some transmissions had a plate on both sides for 2 ptos!
Fire trucks have pump in line connected through main driveshaft and have engage/disengage for pump/rearend.

I put together a first gen. Bronco with a front PTO winch driven off the transfer case. Un stoppable 4 speed winch with reverse:thumbsup:
I ordered a '01 Super Duty with a PTO acess on that POS auto tranny they offered back then, it was under $100 but I never used it.

That POS trans you refer to is the 4R100 I mention in my earlier post. The 6spd manual in my F250 had the pto access cover just like my old chevy 4spds did, only on both sides! I love my 6spd... I'd convert the F350 and Excursion if I had the parts to do it, wouldn't think twice.

Had one on a F700 to drive auxiliary hydraulics. Push the clutch in, flip a lever and the PTO would engage by air. Pretty painless. Generally there is a steel cover plate on the side of transmission or transfer case where the PTO would mount. Mind you there are shims stacked under the PTO to set the engagement depth. It take a micrometer to determine the shim thickness.

The shims are used to get the proper backlash in the gear set when they're engaged, also single speed truck PTO drives ship with the drive facing the rear, you can dissemble the unit reversing the output to the front.

My last truck with an Atlas crane had an air shift pto, the older Hiab cranes had the best pumps with 6 pistons run off a swash plate.

My dump truck uses a PTO mounted to the side of the transmission. It was an old fire truck and had a pump mounted to the front pulley. The only signs are a square hole in the radiator and grill for the PTO shaft.

I have an old ford tow truck outside that has a PTO. Throw it in neutral, engage the PTO and let off the clutch and winch away. Idle control off the back end if you want it to winch faster or harder. Rusty, old and beat up... but i love it. Comes in handy working on the tractors sometimes. Even saved a CK from an unwanted swim once while digging out the pond with the extend-a-hoe.

I have a PTO driven hydraulic pump on my '04 F350 manual 5 speed. You can then use the hydraulics to power whatever you want...air compressor, welder, generator, or in my case I only use the hydrulics to drive a winch (3,000 lb single line and 12,000 lb when 4 parted).

Not all trucks have the PTO option, it has to be installed at the factory. The cover may be there but when you pull the cover off there will be a special gear designed to mesh with the PTO.

I had a Jeep from the 50's with a pto on the rear. It had been used on the beach in Destin, Fl so the body was pretty rusty. When I finally gave it up for parts, I kept the pto parts where they hooked into the transfer case. Tripped over them one time too many and finally took them to a guy that I met at a show with a nice jeep and gave it to him. He was happy!
My 2000 F350 with a six speed has the pto plate, and I have several of the gear driven boxes that came from a wrecker yard and some might fit my truck.
I also have a pto driven Bradenton winch (20t) should I even decide to make use of them alone with a divorced transfer case that also could run the pto. My need for a big winch went away, so I probably never will, lol.

Looks like the ZF 6 speed transmission uses a standard 6 bolt PTO, all you need to do now is find a good usable case then replace the internal gear that mates to yours and your in business.

Some PTO's are manufactured so the hydraulic pump bolts directly to the output eliminating the need for a drive line.
