Truck snow plow to Tractor SSQA Conversion

Here's a question for you though... The a-frame will pivot beneath the QA plate on "ears" that will be drilled and pinned through. I was originally going to go with 1" thick steel for that. They didn't have any on hand, so offered 3/4" - but accidentally sold me 5/8". Do you think 5/8" will be strong enough for the 6 pieces where the blade will pivot up and down?

Sean.

I think 5/8" would be overkill but since you have it, use it.
Mine are 3/8" and work fine.

3/8" you say? Ok - at 5/8" then I will be more than fine. Thank you for the reference.

Sean.

According to your drawing you will have 2 pieces of 5/8" plus the upright between them. More than strong enough to hold the plow.

Today's progress:

Welded up the a-frame from all the pieces I cut yesterday.

Fit it to the plow just to check my progress so far
IMG_3052.jpgIMG_3053.jpgIMG_3054.jpg

Cut and drilled the pieces for the a-frame to pivot on the quick attach plate

Tomorrow's job will be to replace the chuck on my drill press that decided to fall off after drilling those 6 1" holes...

I also need to figure out if the old hydraulic cylinders are going to work or not. I hooked them together and am able to compress both cylinders (haven't gone the whole way), but the reciprocal cylinder does not extend when it's mate is compressed. There appears to be fluid at the end of the hose, so at this point I'm guessing there is air in the system. Both cylinders will compress, but no fluid is leaking out, so it's gotta be air right?

Would seem like air, can you compress one cylinder, place it's line in a bucket of hydraulic fluid then pull to extend that cylinder it should suck the oil into it.

Hey LouNY - fresh out of hydraulic fluid at the moment... I'll have to pick some up and give it a try. I figure it's promising that I can even move the cylinders (with a long bar clamp to compress them) - so maybe I'll get working hydraulics this year! :)

I've never seen anything thicker than 3/8" steel used on the Fisher truck plows except for the cutting edge. They generally recommend ATF on the older plows if you have that laying around to try. Should be fine with hydraulic fluid as there's no pump involved.

Time to update with some more progress... Today was time to weld the structural bracing to the quick attach plate:
IMG_3062.jpgIMG_3063.jpg

I'm fairly happy with the welding. I'm a rank amateur welder - so this is a fairly satisfactory result. No - I didn't take pics of the welds that looked worse than this... :)
IMG_3060.jpgIMG_3061.jpg

Now time to weld on the "ears" that will accept the pins for the plow pivot point. As has been established in this thread - massive overkill - but here are 3 - 5/8" pieces with a 1" pin through them.
IMG_3064.jpgIMG_3065.jpgIMG_3066.jpg

Not ready to weld it on yet - but here is the quick attach with pivot point being held onto the a-frame in the approximate position it will end up in. Not sure how far forward to put it yet such that it still allows full pivot.
IMG_3068.jpgIMG_3067.jpgIMG_3069.jpg

I haven't had a chance to check out the cylinders that came off the plow to see if they are still functional or not. After I check (or replace) them - the next steps will be to:
- weld on the receivers for the pins to hold the cylinders
- weld the quick attach plate assembly to the a-frame
- weld the grab hooks for the chain to the top bar on the quick attach
- weld the D-Ring to the front of the a-frame and chain it up.

Question for folks... You can see in the picture with the blade sitting up on blocks - the back blade is hanging down (pic 1 of the last set). From what I can tell - I can either have the back blade plate - OR I can have shoes for the plow to run on - but not both. The back blade has cutouts to go around the fittings where the shoes would go - but putting shoes in those fittings would interfere with the back blade. Am I reading that right?

So... If I can have one or the other - which should I have? Laneway is about 500 meters - all gravel. If I waited until I had a frozen layer - could I get away without shoes? Never used a blade before. Tractor has a 7' wide blower on the back.
