The metric system is much more intuitively designed than the antiquated imperial system.

In the metric system, 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm, and 1 km = 1000 m. 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 ton = 1000 kg. Water freezes at 0C and boils at 100C.

In the imperial system, 1' = 12", 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches, 1 miles = 1670 yards = 5280 ft. A pound is 16 ounces and a ton is 2000 pounds. Water freezes at 32 F and boils at 212 F.

That's the reason that while it's not the "official" system in the US, just about any real work that gets done in science and engineering anymore takes place using the metric system. There's a good reason that every country in the world save the US, Liberia, and Myanmar (great company!) are on the metric system now. Even the British have abandoned the imperial system!

Please describe the oh-so-common 2X4X8 building stud using the metric system...? And BTW...you say above that 1 ton is 1000 kg. IT IS NOT. The conversion is 1 ton = 907.185 kg. Sorry if I am confused with your logic.

Miles per IMPERIAL gallon? OMG you mean there's more than one type of gallon??!!!

Yes, the US gallon is smaller, 3.76L. makes a difference when figuring mpg from a US based site, our mpg will be better. Add to that the crazy highway speeds they drive, also lowers mpg.

But is it a 2x4x8? I think not. You need to add fractions now.

Which ton? Metric or imperial? Short or long?
Only residential construction clings to imperial up here, commercial has gone metric.

The Only way you will buy a true 2x4 is to go to a lumber mill, the box store lumber is under sized and garbage.

And for real confusion:
Which weighs more - an ounce of gold or an ounce of feathers? Gold - 480 grains versus 437.5 grains
Which weighs more - a pound of gold or a pound of feathers? Feathers - 453.59 grams versus 373..24 grams

Gold is weighed by Troy weight.
Troy weight is a system of units of mass customarily used for precious metals and gemstones. There are 12 troy ounces per troy pound,[1] (373.24 g) rather than the 16 ounces per pound (453.59 g) found in the more common avoirdupois system. The troy ounce is 480 grains, compared with the avoirdupois ounce, which is 437 1⁄2 grains. Both systems use the same grain defined by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 as exactly 0.064 798 91 gram.[2] Although troy ounces are still used to weigh gold, silver, and gemstones, troy weight is no longer used in most other applications.

To add to the "fun" in modern-day light trucks.... Tow Rating.

Here, to use any more than about 1/3 of what "1 ton" diesels are rated to tow (other than RV trailers), you need a Class A CDL..... plenty of people don't get this either, up until they get a mega-dollar ticket.....

Ford Canada tried to simplify it when the F-series trucks were first introduced in 1948. The Canadian versions of the U.S. models were actually labelled by their GVW ratings. For example, in Canada an F-1 was labelled F-47 (4700 lbs. GVW), the Canadian version of the F-3 was labelled F-68, etc., right up to the F-155. Canadian versions of the F-7 (F-190) and F-8 (F-215) came later in 1949. (We also had M-47 through M-215 models in the Mercury truck line.) However their advertising also listed the (even then obsolete) ton ratings, e.g the M-155 3-ton.
I suspect the GVW based model labelling soon became cumbersome when a plethora of options began creeping into the system. In any event it only lasted a few years.

I hope I haven't violated any copyrights by linking to these ads in Hank's Truck Pictures website - a tremendous collection of truck memorabilia.

It's just semantics. If discussing in literal terms, the ratings make no sense today. If discussing in a figurative sense, it makes complete sense.

Your a literal guy in a figurative world.

In the trades here in USA most all measurements are in inches, feet yards etc. Back in the 60's they tried to get the metric system used in the trades here but was rejected by the men and women. For me, I'll continue to use our imperial system but if the metric works for you, go for it. Been working for me for 70 some years. Just my thoughts and experience, regards, Bob.
