Trusty JD and a big Log

Well - I have a green log chart. It tells me how much a 5' or 10' chunk of green Ponderosa pine will weigh. My pine will get up to and a bit bigger than 36" on the butt. So a 10' chunk that's 36" on the butt will weigh around 3180#. My tractor will lift this but with all due consideration its just a little to dangerous to transport this weight. So the 10' becomes 5' - weighs around 1600# - and is easily transported.

I don't have the time, patience or reason to be in a weight lifting contest.

When my 28" bar can't make it through from both sides it's definitely a bad day. Wait, that's never happened. The one on my forklift is a little better than 40" DBH and it's probably the biggest log I've had.

That comes to 45 pounds a cubic foot assuming it's 36" diameter the whole length. I'm guessing the chart is high by 1000 pounds or so.

I'm fairly certain the largest tree on our property is well under 36" in diameter. Most are in the 14" and under range, but average over 60' tall.

If you have to strain its big enough.

Unless I had my buddy who's not allergic to that crap I'd have left that alone. I'd probably be in the hospital after cutting that log.

That's why I had my brother cut it for me, I didn't touch it! It was standing dead in my front yard, every time the wind blew it dropped sticks and branches all over. There are 3-4 just into the brushline just like it, I'll take them out eventually but this one was the worst!

Oooo - tough crowd today!

A week and a half later, let me be the first to say thanks for sharing. That was indeed a handful for your equipment.

Cleaning up my neighbors yard. Ran across this dry pine tree - about 30 ft long. No problem lifting it with grapple and 32 HP.

That looks pretty big on your little tractor. It is fun doing things with your tractor that you wonder if it will do!

4570man - I recalculated a 36" x 10' chunk of P. pine and it still comes out 3180#. Perhaps my calculations are in error but that would mean that ALL the calculations on the web site I use were also in error.

Formulas and values

TT - - pie(3.14)
D - - diameter in inches
R - - radius in inches
1728 Cu In = One cubic foot
One Cu Ft of P. pine weighs - - 45#

TT x R2 x length(in inches) = Cu inches

Cu in divided by 1728 = Cu Ft

Cu Ft x 45 = total log weight

3.14 x (18x18) x 120 = 122, 083.2 Cu In

122083 divided by 1728 = 70.65 Cu Ft

70.65 x 45 = 3179.25 pounds
