Trying to bleed system after first hydraulic filter change

So my 1st hyd. filter change went 'OK'... What kept it from Great is that when I unscrewed the cap on the pump to install the bleed hose, the fitting came off the pump instead of the cap off the fitting... I happen to have a Metric set of stubby wrenches, but it goes from 16 to 18mm, and that fitting is 17mm .

After filling the filter to the top of the threads, I spun it on slightly, and then used the small oil bottle you see in the pic to fill it up to within 1/16" of the edge before tightening. I figured that would help with less air to bleed out...?

I used a peanut butter jar to perform the air bleed. The hose is snug in its hole, so I drilled a 1/16" hole for venting. It worked well, but a larger jar would have been better as I had to empty it 4-5 times before I was sure there was no more air.

(Again, I don't know why the pics revert back to their original rotation after I've rotated them properly on my computer before uploading...)

I use a jelly canning jar placed inside of a coffee can to limit the number of times I dump it but still be able to see the bubbles without wasting more oil.

In my opinion, and I am truly no expert, I fill my filter up as much as i can and screw it on. I do not go through the extra step of continuing to fill or any of that sort of stuff. I do connect the hose from the tram and send it to my tank.

My thoughts on pre-fillng the filter which is going to create a stir, is that it takes a while (like hours) to extract the air out of the filter (unless it is under pressure). I get it as closed to full, let it sit for a few while I get myself ready for the **** that is trying to get it back on on my machine, and then top it off. but not too high as I have to tilt a bit to get it on.

I pre-fill my filter as well, then let it sit for a while, then fill it again, let it sit, about 3 times, then install it. I wipe the bleed hose down really well before attaching it to the bleed port and putting the open end in the tank. Pull my plug wires and crank about 10 seconds. Wait a good minute or so and repeat. I was always raised to not crank starters too long to avoid overheating and prolong life. Anyhow, I usually get no more air bubbles after the 3rd or 4th round of cranking. Then I remove the bleed hose, wipe it down again and store it in a heavy zip-lock back for next time to keep it clean.
