$10 per hour can kind of keep on from starving in our area if they are good with money. It takes two in a household to own a home and vehicles in most cases I agree hence with the $40K figure.

Not sure the couple grossing $40K a year should be expected to keep many non working non retired supported at the same level of income.

Taking from the rich by force to give to the poor is not the only answer out there I expect. We are told the poor will always be with us and if that is true I am at a loss for a real solution.

My father had a path to better himself. I do think we need to make sure that is true in the future. The government did not clear the path for my father by giving him free money.

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy?
Attributed to Alexander Fraser Tytler, Scottish lawyer and writer, 1770.

I thought the above quote was topical to the current thread! Wonder why if they knew this in 1770, we can't figure it out now????????????

The Founders aka the guys that wrote the US Constitution knew about these dangers....

Given that almost 50% of the wage earners do not pay Federal income taxes...

The last time I checked the maximum UE benefit in NC was about $1,800 a month before taxes. How the government can TAX UE benefits is another question... If I loose my job $1,800 a month aint gonna pay the bills. We will have to dip into retirement funds to pay the bills. I think I can earn $200-300 a month and NOT loose the UE benefit but that is not going to pay the bills.

I just saw a report today that said that HALF of the people hired by US companies were hired overseas. The unemployment rate would be 8-9% if all of the people hired by US companies had been in the US.

It looks like the economy is improving but with the overseas hiring the recovery here in the US is going to be slower than it should be. Course it could be worse. We could be living in some of the EU countries. :D

Dan

I never understood why they just don't make the benefits supplemental. If you're laid off and take a lower paying job, then the benefits make up the difference.

Decades ago my DW's friend fell on hard times - her husband up and disappeared leaving her with their infant. The poor girl was working three jobs to pay the bills and asked for assistance to help cover daycare costs - which were extravagant given she was working all the time. She was denied because she was working and made more than the limit.

She would have been better off to stop working altogether and just collect....

NuBota...What you suggest makes too much sense so that will never fly ! But you have a great idea..can you imagine if the government said..to get unemployment benefits you must go get a job, any job and then we will supplement your pay up to a certain fixed amount...Now that would really give an incentive to someone to work and not sit at home with their hand out...So we are left to ask why is the government doing it this way..? Could it be for votes...let the folks sit at home with no hassle and they will vote for us..?

Yea - it's disappointing, to say the least. I worked for companies in the past that would participate in prison work release programs and handicap programs. Granted, there were varying degrees of success, but there were some that benefited from the program and went on to be productive (relatively) members of society again.

When I worked construction, our boss kept our work crews small so he could keep us employed year round. If we got busy, or had large projects, he would bring in labor from an inner city temp agency. There was, again, varying degrees of success. Work-release, parolees, drug addicts - but there were also some that would work their butts off - and we would request the latter, even if it meant it took them a little longer to show up. A couple were eventually hired on full time.

As other's have mentioned - there are many creative ways that this issue could be addressed. Temp agencies would be a good way to go as a supplement to the bennies. The person would still sit at home - "job hunting" - but if the agency calls - they go to work, or get tracked as not going. And the agency could treat them as 1099 workers instead of W-2 employees so they don't have to absorb significant overhead on their payrolls. Yea, would have to work out some liability issues, but it is doable - better than how it works now...

I dunno - very frustrating topic...... :D

On June 26, 1997, New York teacher Roland Pierre was was arrested on felony ***-abuse charges after allegedly calling one of his PS 138 sixth-grade students into an empty classroom, closed the door and

Stories like this just drive me nuts. How did our country ever get into this predicament? I feel like our country has a "slow cancer" that goes undetected until it is too late. Ken Sweet

I agree, the theory that one is innocent until proven guilty is just too expensive. Accusation should be adequate reason to deprive anyone of their livelihood or even their life. :confused2: Don't get me wrong, I believe that proven pedophiles (sp?) should be permantly removes from society. Union membership often buys legal resources that single workers could never afford. Ken, I'm a little surprised to see you taken by a couple of historical union bashers. MikeD74T
