The manager wouldn't deal, so I chose the shiniest one he had in stock. The faded one was still there, a year later, the last time I was there. It wouldn't bother me if he was stuck with it until it crumbles into the ground.

Don it always amazes me that some of the stores aren't a bit more flexible in a situation such as yours. That faded, rusting implement represents their store dollars sitting on a shelf and until they sell it capital that unusable to them. You were willing to take it for a few dollars less but evidentially they weren't ready to bargain, my guess is that until the store managers attitude changes a bit it will sit and rust further.
