I have always had this crazy thought about 7 and 8 ft rotary cutters. A 7 ft has 1 simple gearbox to maintain and by adding 1 ft cutting width, you inherit 2 more gearboxes and 2 more blades and cross connectors to maintain in addition to extra cost. Is it worth it? Don't get me wrong, we stock and sell both models and the customer is always right. As a retired Machinest, I guess I may focus too much on things like this?? Ken Sweet

with a 7' cutter you have a deep deck which is heavy.. it has alot of rotational mass too. with an 8' deck, you really are only as deep as a 4' mower.. but yet 8' wide.. instead of being 7' wide and 7' long...

I have yet, to see a 8 ft double gearbox setup that did not streak in the center when the cutter was raised pretty high for clipping pastures. Cutting low, no problem. I dont't know exectly why this is, however it disappears when you go to the 10 ft? Does Howse make a 8 ft double gearbox cutter today? Ken Sweet

I believe howse does. I have one of their 10' double gear box units, and it does not streak... it's a great cut.. for flat ground.. get into dips and such and it can scalp.. have to use my batwing for anything with dips and bumps and such..

I believe that the major week point on this cutter is on picture #4 where the bar bolts to the metal on the top center of the deck. Would be better to weld another piece on the other side of both bars and have the bar bolted in the middle with weld on both sides. This seems like an area that takes most of the weight when deck is raised. I really see no other issues with this cutter other than the standard TSC gearbox.
