The standard auger bits that come with the TSC post hole digger are long, and the BX most likely will not have the lift height needed to raise the auger off the ground.
Shorter bits may be availible ( I don't know)

I saw some post hole diggers at TSC that were gasoline engine types that either one or two people could operate (no tractor necessary) and was wondering if anyone has any experience using these and could recommend for or against buying one. They were around $200 plus another $110 for an auger bit if I recall correctly.

Do they beat you up or wear you out if you have more than a couple holes to dig? And do they work in hard packed clay? I used the old fashioned man-powered kind to set my mailbox post, and that convinced me I'm not in good enough shape to dig many holes that way.

I didn't see any 3pt posthole diggers at TSC, and I was wondering how much these usually cost in comparison. I assumed they were much more expensive.

We have a one man auger. We bought it for doing jobs around houses where we can't take a tractor as well as doing some holes for a fence in soft ground. It will work fine but you will know what you have done at the end of the day. I suggest if you get the one man you plan on using two people to run it still. If it catches a root it will send you flying if your not careful. If you have a tractor, and can get the tractor where you want a hole drilled, I would get a 3pt auger.

Are you talking about the Kubota BX1500? If so then dont get the TSC post hole digger It wiill not work. The bx1500 is a little small and you will not have enough angle to life a post hole digger high enough. There is a BX specific post hole digger available though. Check with the kubota dealer.

The Woods PHD25 might work for you. It has 30" long augers, where the "standard" are 40-42"

I'm going by memory here, so I could be a little off, but I think the Speeco 3 point PHD at Tractor Supply runs around $350.
6" auger around $100, 12" auger around $110.

I agree with Robert about the one man units. They work well in sandy or soft soil but not as well in hard packed clay. If you use it where there are roots or rocks it will bruise the left side of your body from your ribs to your knees if it doesn't break your wrist or throw you off all together. After using it for a few hours you will know you've been working. If you only have a few holes to dig, they are a lot faster and better than hand operated clam-shell PHDs. I've used a 2-man unit and its a lot easier to control but even it will throw you both off if the auger hangs up and you are a bit slow on the throttle. Give me a 3-pt PHD any time. Let the tractor do the work.

Has anyone bought the Tractor Supply Company post hole digger or 3 point hitch mounted log splitter. </font>

I bought the post hole digger two years ago. As mentioned by others, the standard auger is about 2 inches too long to get it lifted off the ground. So I drilled another set of holes in the boom for the top hitch attachment, spaced the same as the existing three sets. The auger now clears the ground by about 3 inches. It looks like the PTO U-joints are right on the ragged edge of use when fully lifted, so this may not be a good idea for an all-day useage, but I only need to put a handful of holes in /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Do you have any pictures of how you did it. I called Kubota and they said they dont make a PHD for the BX15, but do show one for the BX1830 and BX23. I think the height of the tires is the issue here.
