Hi All.I want to put one of those tube gate at the entrance of my barn which has a opening width of 10'.My question is do i get a 10'gate or do i get a 8'? I was thinking a 8' to allow for the hinges and such.Or would either one work? Thanks for all input.

I think too long would be better than too short. Long would just close against the post, short would just be, well, too short.

Depends on how you hang it to barn - hinges with plate for leg bolts or hinges with 1" through bolts. Both hinges only require about 6" of return. So your 8' gate becomes 8.5' roughly. I would got with ten feet. If it overlaps opening - you know nothing can squeeze out!

The attached picture shows the ten foot gate going into place. The hinges have plates that are leg bolted into place. They are bolted into corner post of barn with 6" leg bolts.

Also think about clearance for swinging a 10' gate... takes a lot of room.

Oh Crap i forgot to mention that on the post where i would mount my hinges there are 2 one on each post the latches that secure the barns sliding door. They might get in the way of the 10' maybe the 8' is the way to go??

If you have sliding doors - we have. I would go 8 and slide door to edge of gate and fasten - that is if you intend gate to cover opening of the sliding door when open.

A gate typically will be undersized. If you have a 10' opening, a 10' gate with the lags etc will fit.

However, be aware, that gate opens both ways, but not all the way back onto the fence. You may wish to mount the lags on the side where the gate overlaps the post and have a smaller opening if you wish the gate to swing one way all the way back to the fence/barn.

Why don't you get a 9' gate?
Or make a wooden one the right length
or have it welded from tube
or use two 4 foots and extend the hinges to max -- just some thoughts

I have 14' gates with posts set 13'6" apart. When closed the gate overlaps the post a little which allowed me to screw a rest to the post to let the gate rest on. Some folks are good enough to do that without the overlap (centered between posts).

Personally I think 8' will be way to short, get a10', heck you can always take it back...

BTW, folks in this area call them Bull gates, I don't know why though...bull tuff maybe?

I have found this to be true with gates from Farm & Fleet There is enogh room for the hindge and latch inside the opening. Spend the extra money and buy the heavy duty gate. The cheeper ones are cheep.

If its not too late, I suggest you mount the gate such that a horse pushing on it will not allow it to open. I.e: push it against a jamb. Too many horse operators set it up such that a loose horse will push through the latch, chain, tie or catch. Then the horse is out or worse, the horse gets injured when the gate gets crashed. Same for fencing. Why do folks put boards and wire on the outside of posts? All an animal has to do is lean on it and it's through. If you want the neighbors to admire your fence, put boards on both sides.
