I always thought that most gate makers allowed four inches for the hinges and the latch. In other words, a twelve foot gate would be eleven foot eight inches, etc. etc. That way, you set your posts with an even space between them which is what I did when I put up some fence last year.
So, I never bothered to check with the manufacturer that I buy from. Wouldn't you know, their twelve foot gate is exactly that so my posts were set wrong. Those will eventually be moved when I add more fencing and be replaced by gates from another maker.
The area I live in is the self proclaimed gate capital of the world. There are gate makers everywhere here.
