I am adding tail wheels to my flail mower.

I have not been able to find a piece of tube to put bearings in to allow this tail wheel to pivot (spin in a circle). Timken set 6 bearing will fit the shank

  • Diameter of shank: 1 1/4"
  • Length of the shank: 5"

Does anyone have a suggestion on what to use to hold a bearing with a 1.25" ID?

I've never seen a rotary cutter tailwheel with any bearings at all, just a steel shaft in a steel tube. That always seemed like poor construction, but it must work.

If I was building something like you are, I would use bronze bushings instead of roller bearings.

What I did to improve caster wheel shafts from bending and wearing out was to use 3500# trailer axle stubs and hubs. Got 4 kits with all parts on eBay for $110. Going into our six season with a 20year mower. Easy to weld stub to wheel yoke. Made plate bolt hub. Double tapper roller bearings have lots of strength in this application.

I think replacing OEM parts that would not last long was $650 at the time. No maintenance ( caps and seals keep bearings sealed) yet and no more wore out tubes and bent shafts.

SEAMLESS COLD DRAM STEEL TUBING is what you need. Or DOM tubing. You might need to order a small piece of it off the internet. That's what I have did while building walking beam trailer bearings.

I’m looking at online metal stores for some and it looks affordable.

It just not having tolerance for the bearing but also need ledge to seat the outer race. Then preload the bearings. Not easy without a spindle and hub.

Bushing are more forgiving like others have suggested. Steel tube and steel stem works on bush hog and finishing mowers. With all the back and forth trimming with our finish mower the caster stems were bending and tubes wearing out too fast and making drag marks on the lawn.
