turbo or not

I have 4 turbo diesel trucks, and would like to add one to my little 1.3L powered tractor... it simply makes a diesel more efficient. With a turbo, you can use the same fuel, add more air (because of the turbo) and get more power. However, as has been pointed out, it's only at higher RPM ranges, and not likely to be of much use at low RPM ranges. That being said, the extra power at WOT during brush hogging would benefit me.

As to the added hardware, in a factory designed system, it should last longer than most home owner will run one. But short run times, and improper cool down after heavy use can hurt them. Once you train yourself to a new routine, you'd be fine. But they aren't rocket science, and are rebuildable. I just rebuilt one for my 7.3 powerstroke.

Right but I am not saying turn it back towards the operator. I mean just put a little radius downward on it so it doesn't require a cover.

It points downward a bit but any air flow can cause the turbo to spin, a spinning turbo has no oil flow and CAN cause damage, that's still up for debate.

Whether or not the turbo spins who knows, it's just one of those possible things.

I can't say I have ever heard or read about a turbo that failed prematurely due to spinning dry, hard thing to prove.

It would seem like in order for the turbo to spin while being towed the air would have to go through the turbo and wind up coming out somewhere else. Maybe EGR would allow the air to pass through and come out of the intake? But the intake usually also kind of points forward so it wouldn't seem like much pressure differential between the two openings.
