Is there any reason why the checkered style turf tires are not used any longer? I'm talking about tires like the ones on the rear of this JD 750:
eBay: JOHN DEERE 750 COMPACT TRACTOR "FIXER UPPER"!! buySAFE (item 140055927747 end time Nov-30-06 17:15:00 PST)

What were the advantages/disadvantages of these tires?

I have a narrow set of these on a '64 cub loboy and they are original; still having at least half of the tread remaining...

I have not seen this tread pattern on any new tractors or any tire manufacturers websites.

They are R3 style. They are and option for most tractors and used mainly for turf mowing like a golf course. They don't have alot of traction in the mud as compared to R1 (Ag) or R4 (industrial). The smaller sizes have weak side walls and low load ratings and will limit a FEL's capacity.

Thanks for the reply!

If it makes any difference, I was not talking about R3's in general...I was talking about that particular tread...

Tread patterns are like bellbottoms and bushy sideburns - they go out of style. New ones come in that are "new and improved".

Ah, i see. Firestone still uses that pattern on their "Turf and Field" R3.

That is the style of the ones that came with my used JD2555.
They got removed due to the problems I had with them out in the mud on the back of my property.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to where to get turf tires? I'd like to have a set (on wheels) that I could swap out with my ag tires. I like the ag's for snow removal, but would like to have turf tires for mowing.

You would be amazed at how well turfs work in the ice and snow with a good set of chains. Its all I use on my machine - throwing a set of chains on in the fall is a lot easier than storing and changing a set of loaded tires for me.

Seems like any good tire dealer can set you up. I like the Titans on my NH.

Most dealers carry chains for turfs that they sell. I have turfs on a New Holland TC 29 which is 4 wheel drive and use FEL to move snow. Have not needed chains yet.

I would try the turfs without chains before you spend the money. Turfs that have a pattern like truck mud and snow tires work great on snow. Much better than you would think. On ice though, nothing beats chains.
