A few days ago when I turned the key to start the tractor, I heard a "click", but the starter did not turn. I tried it once more and same thing. I tried it yet again and this time it turned over strong and started right up.

Now today I have the same problem only after probably twenty tries it won't turn. The battery is strong, the connections look good (including ground). I guess the sound I hear is the solenoid?

What can I do to diagnose the problem and what should I do to fix it? Any thoughts?

Thanks, Keith Zack

clean batt post. Check batt. voltage with volt meter

My ignition switch was failing and did that. (I cut it open and found it was packed solid with pillbug carcasses. And the design is throwaway, not repairable). Try jumpering across the ignition switch to diagnose if it has gone bad.

But a more likely cause is the starter solenoid, or possibly a loose connection so power from the ignition switch isn't reaching the solenoid.

Mine is VERY sensative to a loose or dirty connection at the battery. I'll get the clicking noise and check the connections. Connections appear fine and tight, but just removing the leads and reinstalling will result in it working again. So don't just assume it "feels" like a good connection. ;)

Okay, I held the key in the start position and one of the connections at the solenoid began to heat up and actually a bit of smoke appeared and then it cranked strong and started.

I'm assuming this connection needs cleaned (it looks very grimey) and tightened up. And hoping this solves the problem, but I don't have time to address it now. Will report back when I've looked at it.

Thanks

yep, a good ground is very important. working on a 2000 that had really bad battery cables. I used jumper cables from battery to starter and it fired right up. before we had clicking and nothing. SO try that first.
good luck,
E:cool:

One of Mine sits outside in the Weather & does that quite often, I think it just draws moisture in it from not being started every day. I just Gently tap on the Starter with a little hammer & It turns right over right up. Might not be Your problem. But its a thought . Best of Luck.

I had a old harley and it would do the starter clicking thing. I cleaned the post and battery cable ends, nothing. After trying everthing that I could come up with I started replacing parts. Being the least expensive part I replaced the battery cables even thought they looked good. Started right up. I cut open the cables and the ground cable was green with corrosion on the inside but looked new on the outside. This was a bike that stayed in a heated garage. I have seen ground straps that were coated with green corrosion but the one that I had was a plastic coated one. You might try the the trick that E Tractor did with the jumper cables. big dan
