turtle/pond question

   / turtle/pond question #21
Not too worried about my dogs tail but I need to have some kind of excuse to sit around the back porch with the trusty .22 mag. Protecting our pets seemed to be a good enough excuse, at least that is what I told the wife.

When I was a kid we lived by a lake with lots of turtles. One day, I'm in my boat and I see this 8" painted turtle come flying out of the water and up onto shore. I'm not kidding when I say that thing flew about 2' up and 6 feet onto shore. Well, turtles being turtles, it runs right back into the lake... right into the mouth of a very large pike! We watched that pike play "toss the turtle" for about a half an hour. It never flung it onto land again, but it did toss it around in the shallows over and over again. When it was all over, we found the turtle with no legs or head. Over that summer, we found many dead turtles missing all appendages. Maybe you should get some pike to take care of the little turtles before they get big. ;)

I had a friend lose all his Koi from a water garden over a two week time period. Some were two feet long. Many just had their tail eaten off.

They are very destructive and if you ever approch one, very aggressive!
