Oil & Fuel Two Jimna 284 questions: Swivel chair? And foamy gear oil coming out of breather

If it's anything like the "tar" that came in my tractor, the only practical solvent I found that would cut it was kerosene. I drained the oil and added kerosene, jacked it up off the ground and ran it at idle speed in gear for about two minutes. The blackest gnarly crap came out and left the inside pretty clean. That was many years ago, wish I had taken pics.

One of the recommendations I read when I was putting my 284 together was to "over fill" the transmission. Someone had determined that it ran a lot quieter if there was enough gear oil (80-90) to have the upper most shaft running at least partially submerged. Doing so has never caused it to overflow. However, it does make installing the backhoe pump interesting as the fluid level is above the pump mounting hole. My solution was to back the tractor up onto my trailer leaving the front wheels on the ground. Let it sit a couple of minutes and the fluid will run forward enough to allow installation of the pump without any loss. Interestingly, this has never caused an overflow at the breather.

I can't think of anything that would make the transmission/rear differential case oil to collect water or cause foaming unless the shift boot was bad and it was left sitting out in the rain. I would follow Bob's advice, drain, flush and refill with new fluid, start at the dipstick level and see what happens. You can always add more later.

As to your seat problem. The seat you have looks nothing like the one that came on my tractor. When I bought it, I had a choice of swivel seat or not. Since I was getting the backhoe I opted for the swivel. There is a plate that mount to thr top of the hydraulic tank and there are two two sleeves that overlap with a hole going all the way through. You pull the pin and the seat swivels 180° for backhoe operation. I have the frame mounted backhoe and the swivel seat is completely worthless. When it is turned around there is no way you can get it to slide far enough to the rear to be able to adequately reach the controls for the backhoe, and I am 6'2"! What I wound up doing is folding the ROPS bar down and sitting on that. I even made a little clamp on pad to sit on. That also gets me up higher to be able to see into the hole better. 100_0846.JPG

Yup, that is the base that came on my tractor. The swivel works great but the seat is way too low to use with a frame mounted backhoe. See the picture above. The problem when sitting on the seat when reversed you can not adjust it far enough back to easily reach the controls and you are so much lower that it makes looking into the hole difficult.
It might be OK for a 3 point backhoe but I have no experience with that.
I was sitting on the back of the seat but that was terribly uncomfortable for any length of time. I have seen backhoes where the seat swiveled and was mounted on a folding mechanism that allowed it to rise up and move towards the back at the same time. I considered making something like that until the ROPS folding came to mind.

Kerosene to flush the gearbox. Fill it up, drive it a bit to slosh it around a bit and drain it. Any left in there with the new gear oil will slowly evaporate so check the oil level regularly and top off as necessary.

Built my own swivel seat for my frame mount jw-03 hoe...

Ed,

What year and model of tractor do you have? More importantly, which engine do you have? Check the engine tag and post year and model then we can more specifically help you diagnose your situation

As a side note, you probably should put this in a new thread as this thread has nothing to do with your situation and that will cause future searches of the forum to not return the proper results.

In any case it is not likely that you have problems with all the things you listed but rather just one failed component. Most likely to be a sheared key between a gear and shaft. But that is strictly speculation at this point.

Welcome Ed.
Yeah you should start a new thread because this could get involved. Just out of curiosity, do you have a compression release?
