TYM 273 Replacement Battey

So, 4 months later and with a bit of laziness on my part for not going out and looking for it, but the TYM273 battery hold down bracket is STILL "back ordered" at TYM. I have a feeling it will never be available. A dealer sent me some other parts for the Electrical assembly I thought I'd replace (like the preheat relay) but PLATE COMP SET part number 13151122200DG seems is jut not going to appear.

I looked at some adjustable hold downs but they're too small and meant to go around the middle of the battery not lengthwise which is about 12" from J-hook to J-hook (the battery itself is about 9")

just get a piece of 1 in. angle, drill holes thru angle at correct distance for j bolts ,pad it n bolt it in. works on dirt stockcars so tractor is not a problem

Turning into a saga! Finally after about 3-5 mths gave up on TYM parts guy who delivered $80 worth of useless stuff including J-bolts that were way too long and with the most important stuff (like the top bracket) on permanent back order and found some good J-bolts on Amazon. So tried those out and looks like in the vertical position the hold down bracket would go right over the battery terminals. So this got be thinking about the battery type 51 vs 51R - think I have a 51 but I bought this from Sears 4 mths ago, took the old battery in for a credit and it LOOKED the same at the time (+ and - in right place) but I guess it couldn't have been because the only way the new battery fits with the hold down bracket in the right place is the the terminals reversed where the existing leads won't reach. No way am I taking the battery back now so I thought I'd find some non-metallic plastic type material I could drill 2 holes in for the J-bolts and just have the bracket be off set a bit from the terminals -J bolts at a slight angle should be secure enough and if not well we'll see.

So now plexiglass shatters. So I ordered some polycarbonate supposed not to shatter - we'll see how that goes.

Any other suggestions welcomed!

Could it be that easy!! I thought you used a 1" angle? I can't believe how much time I've spent on this -I must be neurotic.

After running all over checking with interstate ect. looking for a replacement, came here.
Long to short...Naps auto sold me a 7551 battery for 109.00, and two clamp on battery terminals at 1.58 each!
got home,
loosened bolts holding pencil terminal ends to cables,
replaced with new battery terminals,
re-drilled j hook holes wider
relocated horn and headlight relay to outside nut locations after grinding inside captive nuts off of angle.
223 fired right up and I am back in business!
I forgot how helpful this site was, and wont again
John

Hi unibody, I thought I posted about batteries before but I can't remember. I replaced my battery with the same one 7551 from Napa at the same price. I bought their off-sized clamps just like you did and have nothing but the best of luck with the fit and my engine cranks like butter, starts just fine now. I didn't need to do any relocating of relays at all. Just like you I'm happy/satisfied. Greg

great ...not sure who's post I found it on, but this site is great! my angle tie down had two sets of capture nuts and the inner ones interfered so I just buzzed them off ...thanks for posting!
