TYM T233
I have a 12 year ago TYM T233. It has NEVER started very well. Now it flat out refuses to start unless I jump it with my truck.
I have already ran an extra ground wire to the frame. (That did seem to help this summer.)
I have replaced the battery. (Yesterday)
I have added diesel fuel treatment (anti-gel) to the fuel.
It runs fine once it is started.

It is currently around 25 degrees, and snowing. I need to be able to plow my driveway.

Ideas? Suggestions? Simple solutions?

Thank you for any help.

Ideas? Suggestions? Simple solutions?I take it the starter turns the engine over but it will not start. if that's the case fuel delivery could be the problem. That could because by condensate in the fuel tank freezing on the tank out let strainer, crud on the strainer, a clogged, iced up or jelled fuel filter. If you have summer fuel that could result in fuel jelling in the temperature we are experiencing. Fuel treatment won't help once your fuel has waxed up.

Do some trouble shooting. Do you have fuel to the filter from the tank? Do you have fuel from the tank to the lift pump (if you have one)? Do you have fuel to the injector pump(IP)?

Is the tractor in an unheated building or outside. Can you get it into a heated building by pushing or towing it.. Letting the tractor warm up might get rid of the wax . Using a heat gun or a blow dryer on the fuel filter( if it's metal can help thaw out an iced filter. Put the blow dryer in the intake pipe to try to preheat the intake air when you have confirmed you have fuel flow to the IP and try a start. Does your tractor have glow plugs as a starting aid? Or a block heater?

Just some suggestions.

Lets talk Glow Plugs.

Do you have any simple electrical test equipment such as a test light and multimeter?

Without these two tools costing less than $30 you will end up replacing all sorts of parts unnecessarily.

Do you have a wiring diagram in your owner's manual? If you do, scan and post here.

Post photos of your glow plugs and their wiring on your engine.

Since you state your tractor was always a "hard to start," I am thinking of problems other than fuel.

Does the tractor turn over but not long enough hence the need to boost?

A block heater would surely help, also check the glow plugs. A youtube search would assist you with both.
Man I sure am glad that I live in S. Louisiana this time of the year, I can't imagine having to deal with snow on a daily basis.
No matter where you live there will always be some sort of issue that Mother Nature will throw at you.

Best of luck to you. Sometimes your tractor is your best friend, LOL

I have only owned K series Mitsubishi engines so I cant speak specifically about the S series in your machine but mine have always been cold natured and relied heavily on fast cranking speed to start cold. Glow plugs definitely help but this time of year they arent always enough. I think a block heater and a high rated cranking amp battery would go a long way.

Could be any one of a bunch of things (or a combination):

1) Cranking speed - starter (can sometimes improve by removing, cleaning and adding a bit of grease);
2) Air incursion in fuel system - check all fuel line fittings and hoses (especially on/at the fuel filter); fuel return lines; IP (Injection Pump) might be starting to fail (seals);
3) Sticking fuel shutoff (?);
4) Bad glow plugs/GP system - simple resistance test should help discern (testing amperage draw is more precise/definitive);
5) Leaking injectors (this one is hard to diagnose- if everything else gets ruled out then this "might" be it);
6) Compression - low compression and you're never going to resolve w/o a rebuild.

Assumes, of course, you're not running any crap fuel.

Does the glow plug indicator light come on after turning the key to the left? If not, The relay for the plugs is up by the battery and is probably bad. Just replaced mine on the T233 and it solved the no start problem. No glow plug =no start on this tractor especially in cold temps.

If jumping allows it to start. I would think a bad or loose connection somewhere. I would clean all battery connections, starter and ground to frame. But those smaller TYM’s usually get glow plug problems. Does it have a block heater to plug in?
